The WSIB Grants Program aims to enhance workers’ compensation system outcomes by supporting innovative proposals that align to the WSIB's strategic mandate. The proposals funded through the program will help to strengthen Ontario's workers' compensation system and deliver on our priority of making Ontario a safer place to work.

Grant priority areas

The central areas of focus for the 2021 WSIB Grants Program support the WSIB’s strategic plan with a focus on the impact of COVID-19. Three considerations for potential proposals include:

3.        COVID-19 is changing how we support return-to-work and recovery

The Grants Program is committed to supporting the WSIB’s strategic priority of being financially responsible and accountable through the operating practices of the program on an ongoing basis.

Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals that align to the topics of interest identified. Highly practical research and training proposals aligned to the three primary considerations are also accepted.

The Brain Canada Foundation and ALS Society of Canada are pleased to announce the launch of the 2020 Discovery Grants Program.

Since 2014, ALS Canada’s partnership with Brain Canada has resulted in nearly $20 million being invested in leading-edge ALS research that has helped further the study of the disease. The Discovery Grants Program is designed to fuel the innovation that will accelerate our understanding of ALS, identify pathways for future therapies and optimize care to improve the quality of life for people and families affected by this devastating disease.

Applications are now being accepted. All proposals that meet eligibility criteria will be peer-reviewed by a panel of international ALS experts in order to fund projects with the greatest potential to make a difference in creating a future without ALS.

The Indigenous Forestry Initiative (IFI) provides financial support to Indigenous-led economic development projects in Canada’s forest sector. The funding aims to increase Indigenous participation in forestry-related opportunities, businesses, careers and governance.

The program has $13 million of funding over 3 years to support projects across Canada.

Under the Next Generation Network Program (NGNP), CENGN, Canada’s Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks, is looking to fund innovative projects across northern Ontario that demonstrate technology solutions that offer flexible, lower cost, higher performance residential broadband access for northern Ontario communities. This program is designed to prove new technology approaches that can significantly improve business cases or new business models, be used to promote new field-proven innovations from technology applicants, offer an improved level of broadband access to unserved communities, develop new residential broadband ecosystems, and to share technical solutions with other northern Ontario communities looking for access or improvements to residential broadband solutions in their community.

CENGN will be providing funding for individual projects from its Northern Ontario Residential Broadband Program as part of the NGNP. CENGN is seeking technologies that address the requirement for specific technical problem statements that make it challenging to get broadband access to residences within northern Ontario communities. With the increasing demand for on-line municipal services, email communications, on-line cultural development, social media, distance learning, tele-medicine, remote medical monitoring, on-line homework/assignment submission for students, support for on-line business, and increasing need for on-line options to work from home, there is urgent need for high-performance, low-latency residential broadband access in northern Ontario communities.

In order to provide an environment to demonstrate the effectiveness of new residential broadband technology solutions, CENGN will be encouraging community Expression of Interest (EOI) responses from northern Ontario communities who are interested in hosting a technology project in their community. From the Community EOI responses, at least one community will be selected for this project. The project will be designed to prove that a technology solution can be installed and tested while demonstrating a significantly improved level of residential broadband service to the community. This project will also seek to demonstrate a marked improvement in the business case for residential broadband access improvements for the community.

CENGN will also be encouraging EOI responses from technology company applicants who are interested in providing equipment, technology, and support services to be used in the live 3 – 6 month monitored technology project. From the Technology EOI responses, a number of candidate technology companies will be selected for each Northern Ontario Residential Broadband Project to propose a technology solution that can be installed and tested to provide a significantly improved level of residential broadband service for the selected host community.

EOIs are due August 21, 2020.

Objectives

Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) grants foster and enhance the discovery, innovation and training capability of university researchers in the natural sciences and engineering by supporting the purchase of research equipment.

Description

The RTI grants program provides the primary avenue for university researchers in the natural sciences and engineering to obtain up to $150,000 in support for research tools and instruments with a net cost between $7,001 and $250,000. Net cost is defined as the purchase cost of the equipment after any discount from the vendor and before taxes, customs and importation fees, transportation and shipping charges, and assembly and installation costs. The vendor discount must be free of conditions, restrictions or limitations (e.g., cannot be offered in exchange for services from users benefiting the vendor company). The research community is also encouraged to explore other avenues for funding research tools and instruments, including NSERC’s other programs that allow the purchase of equipment as eligible expenses.

Lakehead University will provide matching funds of 10% (up to $10,000) towards the total cost for each successful RTI application.

The EUREKA clusters CELTIC-NEXT and Eurogia2020 have launched a joint call for proposals for research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) projects related to telecommunications and innovative energy technologies.

CELTIC-NEXT's mission is to catalyze research, development and innovation in areas of the next generation of enabling telecommunications technologies and end-to-end services.

EUROGIA2020 addresses all areas of the energy mix, from renewable energy to efficiency, and reduction of carbon footprint of fossil fuels.
