The Fellowship program supports research and/or clinical and professional training for graduate and post-graduate level scientists, physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals to pursue and develop expertise in breast cancer research and care.

The Research Project Grants program funds laboratory and pre-clinical investigations, clinical research, psychosocial, cancer control, survivorship and other breast cancer research projects. Proposed studies may include participatory, community-based methodologies. Projects may be for up to $150,000 per year for 3 years.

The CCEMC is now inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) in the area of Cleaner Fossil Fuel Production and Processing. It is intended for projects which have a strong potential to make significant, verifiable, and sustainable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Cleaner Fossil Fuel Production and Processing is defined as “transforming the way that fossil fuel resources are produced and processed in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” The scope of this definition includes fossil fuel extraction, preparation, upgrading, refining, and other processing including conversion to petro-chemicals. Reducing the consumption of fossil fuel products through energy efficiency improvements is not included in this scope. Only projects meeting this definition will be considered eligible for funding.

EOIs will be accepted from industry, industrial associations, small and medium sized enterprises, R&D organizations, universities, technology developers, and not-for-profit organizations.

Projects must be innovative. Applicants are responsible for demonstrating the innovative nature of their proposed project. Potential aspects of innovation may include new technology, unique application of existing technology, and novel approaches to project development or technology advancement. The CCEMC will not support projects that are assessed to be business as usual.

Up to $50M will be made available for projects funded under this Call subject to the availability of funds. The maximum CCEMC contribution will be $10M over the life of the project (no more than three years), and will support up to one-half of the project’s eligible expenses.

The CCEMC will only match unencumbered private-sector cash contributions to the project. Furthermore, CCEMC will not match other government funds, federal or provincial, including offset credits associated with the project, nor in-kind or non-cash contributions.

The project may take place at any location. However, the proposed development must be applicable for use in Alberta. Applicants must demonstrate the suitability of the technology to Alberta and describe how it will be transferred to Alberta during or after the project.

The specific objective of this funding opportunity is:

• To develop strong researcher-service provider collaborations that will facilitate research in interventions and other therapeutic approaches to substance misuse.

Relevant Research Areas

The CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction with the National Anti-Drug Strategy will provide funding for applications that are determined to be relevant to the following research areas:

• Interventions for prevention or treatment of substance misuse.
• The primary focus will be on illicit drugs and non-medical use of pharmaceutical drugs. Use of alcohol and tobacco are considered relevant in the context of polysubstance abuse.
• Applications that focus solely on tobacco and alcohol will not be considered under this funding opportunity.

Relevant Activities

Activities may focus on, but are not limited to, the following:

• Activities that assist potential teams of researchers, service providers and partners to assess the viability of the partnership and to identify research questions or emerging issues and priorities;
• Consultations with local or provincial health authorities, regarding needs, gaps and opportunities in the health research landscape, priority policy issues and/or priority research questions, where such common understanding is currently lacking or requires further development;
• Pilot testing of interventions for substance abuse to demonstrate researcher, service provider and partner integrated approach.

Objectives

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:

• Encourage Canadian investigators to augment, integrate and evaluate e-health approaches that demonstrate potential in the five relevant research areas subsequently defined.
• Demonstrate the impact of inclusion of end users to empower patients as partners in their care, support evidence-based individualized care, monitor population health and health system performance and/or integrate technologies to improve equitable access to care in resource poor settings to support the continuum of personal and population-based care.
• Foster the establishment of partnerships that yield innovative approaches among clinical programs, researchers and industry, particularly with micro, small and medium-sized Canadian or other relevant enterprises.

The CIHR Institute of Genetics (IG) established the Lap-Chee Tsui Publication Award to honour one of Canada's best known geneticists, Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui, whose discovery of the gene for cystic fibrosis was a milestone in human genetic disease research. Each year this award recognizes outstanding health research carried out by trainees in all fields and disciplines working within the IG's mandate.

Funds Available

Each year, a total of up to two awards and three finalist prizes are made available for published, peer-reviewed, scientific articles led by graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and medical residents:

• One $1,000 award for peer-reviewed publications in the area of biomedical research
• One $1,000 award for peer-reviewed publications in the area of clinical, health services, population health, or genetic ethical, legal and social issues research
• Three $500 overall finalist prizes for peer-reviewed publications for the competition

All awards and finalist prizes are for a term of one-year and are non-renewable.

Qualified researchers are invited to submit letters of intent for projects that fit with one or more of TVN’s four research themes supporting its strategic priorities: 

• Matching care to values
• Empowering, engaging and supporting patients and their families and caregivers
• Improving clinic outcomes
• Improving care across the continuum

Letters of Intent are due Friday, September 6, 2013 by midnight EDT. Submissions will be evaluated by the Network, and by October 1, 2013, successful projects will be invited to submit a full application. For those projects that advance, full proposals are due by December 16, 2013. The Board of Directors will make final decisions on projects to be funded and budgets to be awarded by March 1, 2014.

Provided through our Canadian Partnerships program, these grants support research, knowledge-building, and knowledge-sharing projects. They also fund events and small dissemination activities and products. 

These grants are open to local, regional, national, and international organizations incorporated and headquartered in Canada that produce or share knowledge for development. Individuals may not apply.
