The aim of these CIHR Catalyst Grants is to provide seed money, on a short-term basis, to support capacity building in specific health research areas.

Within the framework of the Catalyst Grant program objectives, the specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

• Promote and increase capacity in innovative and cost-effective trial designs.
• Stimulate researchers from various backgrounds to explore new methodologies.

Examples of activities that might be conducted under this Funding Opportunity (but are not restricted to) are:

• Planning and execution of pilot projects or feasibility studies to generate preliminary data, proof of concept.
• Development and/or validation of new tools, methodologies and/or protocols.
• Develop critical steps in the research needed to deliver research results.

More specifically, this funding opportunity will address post-market drug safety and effectiveness research using each of the following methodologies through the following funding pools:

• Registry-randomized trials
• Direct patient reporting of post-market outcomes
• Bayesian methods and statistical models

The Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre is now accepting proposals for KTE Incubator Projects. We are offering two streams of Incubator projects intended to bridge the gap between research, policy, and practice by using effective knowledge translation and exchange, including synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically-sound application of knowledge to reduce harm from gambling.

Purpose

The KTE Incubator projects are available in two streams:

1. Policy Focus: Projects should aim to provide evidence to policy makers by contextualizing the research within the larger scope of knowledge to establish the best evidence for practice. Researchers should assess the quality of the research and select KTE strategies that reflect how that evidence can best be used for policy and decision making.

2. Community Engaged Research – Applicants will work with a community partner organization to identify and refine an information need that will help meet their organizational objectives related to reducing harm from gambling.  Together the applicants and the community partner will develop a plan to address this information need which may involve knowledge inquiry, knowledge synthesis and/or creation of a knowledge product.  Applicants will be expected to execute the plan in consultation with the partnering community organization.

The fellow will work with a community partner organization to develop KTE capacity and products from a program of research that is already underway or has been recently completed. Together, the fellow and the community partner organization will develop and implement a knowledge translation and exchange plan to produce a product that will be rooted in evidence – aiming to respond to the needs of the community.

Purpose

The KTE Student Fellowship offers opportunities for students to develop their own capacity for KTE by engaging in KTE activities associated with their research through consultation with the OPGRC Knowledge Broker. Students will also develop project management and communication skills along with an in-depth understanding of the problem gambling field.

The Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme is a policy tool that enhances cooperation and dialogue with all partners, based on scientific research, innovation, and knowledge exchange. The SPS Programme provides funding, expert advice, and support to security-relevant activities jointly developed by a NATO member and partner country.

This research program has a funding period of one year only. The intent is to “seed” novel cancer imaging projects in order to obtain preliminary data for subsequent application to national granting agencies, enhancing the potential for success.

The total maximum amount allocated per grant will be $40,000 per project, including previously-funded CCO awards The current submission must be clearly distinct from previously-funded projects.

BioFuelNet Canada now accepting applications for Phase II funding

BioFuelNet Canada is pleased to announce that our call for applications website for Phase II of our research program launched on November 1st. The competition, which involves research into feedstock, conversion, utilization and social, environmental and operational aspects of advanced biofuels, is open to eligible researchers at Canadian institutions of higher learning and their partners. The deadline to submit applications is December 19th, 2014, for funding covering the period of April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2017.

Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD) is launching a Partnerships for Strengthening Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PSMNCH) call for proposals, with a total value up to $370 million. This call follows Canada’s strategy Saving Every Woman, Every Child: Within Arm’s Reach announced by the Prime Minister in May 2014. The PSMNCH call is in line with DFATD’s priority theme of Securing the Future of Children and Youth, specifically Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. Initiatives may be for a maximum duration of five years and must be completed by March 31, 2020. Canadian organizations may submit only one application for this call, either on their own or as the lead organization of a consortium. 

Therefore, potentital applicants are asked to notify the Office of Research Servces (ahacquo1@lakeheadu.ca) of their intent to apply to this initiative no later than November 28, 2014.

This call is designed to fund initiatives that contribute to progress on the issue of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and are in line with one or more of the four following paths:

• Strengthening health systems to improve appropriate health service access and delivery at the local level by training more health workers and facilitating access for mothers and children to necessary health care facilities and interventions. For example, activities that improve access to antenatal care, skilled attendants present at childbirth, newborn survival, postpartum care, sexual and reproductive health care, and health education.
• Reducing the burden of diseases that are killing mothers and children by increasing the coverage of interventions proven to address the main causes of death in mothers, newborns and children. For example, activities that contribute to the prevention, management and treatment of pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and HIV/AIDS.
• Improving nutrition by increasing access to healthy and nutritious food and nutritional supplements aimed at reducing mortality, especially among newborns. For example, activities that support nutrition, nutrition education and breastfeeding; improve consumption practices and community-level food security; and increase the provision of micronutrients.
• Ensuring accountability for results to improve transparency and the quality of statistics and information made available to the public. For example, by supporting the strengthening of national civil registration and vital statistics systems, and disseminating timely and relevant data for planning and decision making.

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to provide undergraduate and health professional students with opportunities to undertake health research projects with established investigators in an environment that provides strong mentorship.

• The maximum stipend contribution per award is $5,000 for four months.
• An additional 25 percent (at minimum) above the stipend contribution (i.e. $1,250 or more) must be secured from other sources by the supervisor(s), such as university funds, CIHR and/or NSERC grants, or any other research funds.

University research awards are designed to encourage research at Canadian universities in areas of interest to Imperial Oil's petroleum, petrochemical and energy resource development businesses. These areas include the fields of engineering, environmental, earth, chemical, and physical sciences.

Awards for specific research projects are made to full-time faculty members to support research work carried out by university students under their direction.

Individual awards are normally available in amounts ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 depending on budgets for the proposed research, availability of funds, and potential significance of the research as determined by Imperial.

Awards are made for one year and may be renewed annually for a maximum tenure of three years.
