Faculty at Canadian universities are invited to submit research projects
for Globalink Research interns in the summer of 2016 until June 18, 2015.

The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship is a competitive initiative for international undergraduates from Brazil, China, France, Germany, India,  Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Turkey and Vietnam. From May to September of each year, top-ranked applicants participate in a 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in a variety of academic disciplines, from science, engineering and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences.

Faculty:

Submit your projects through the faculty application form, which will be available from May 7 to June 18, 2015. You can save projects prior to submission. The Globalink Research Internships Faculty Application Guide, available soon, provides additional information and instructions for submitting your 2016 projects.

The faculty deadline is June 18, 2015, at 5 p.m. PDT.

GRI cycle and Important dates
 

1. May to June 2015
   Professors submit research projects to Mitacs.  All accepted projects are made available to student applicants in an online database. Professor project proposals are due June 18, 2015, by 5 p.m. PDT for Globalink Research Internships 2016.
2. July to September 2015
   International students submit applications and select research projects from the online database.  
3. October to December 2015
   Mitacs provides professors with proposed student candidates for their project, including application details, statement of research interests, CV,  transcripts, and references. Professors are then encouraged contact or interview the suggested students and provide feedback to Mitacs.
4. January to April 2016
   Professors and their accepted student(s) arrange pre-project details (e.g. reading to be completed beforehand) while Mitacs oversees logistics and coordinates with university administrative offices.
5. May to September 2016
   Globalink Research Interns arrive in Canada and work with supervising professors for 12 weeks on the research project.

Matching process and evaluation criteria
 

• Professor project proposals are submitted to Mitacs, reviewed, and upon acceptance, entered into an online database.
• Applications from students are submitted to Mitacs. Students must select a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 7 research projects from the online database.
• The Mitacs Research team scores each application based on criteria including, but not limited to, CGPA, university, and research experience, and ranks students based on their score.
• A list of possible matches is generated by combining the lists of professors submitted by all students.  Each match is weighted based on the student’s score and ranking.
• Please note that approved projects are student-driven. If a professor’s prospective project is not selected for consideration by a student during the application process, it will not be assigned a Globalink Research Intern.

Launch of 2015 Ontario-China Research and Innovation Fund (OCRIF), closing on June 22, 2015

The 2015 Ontario-China Research and Innovation Fund program is now open to receive applications until June 22, 2015.

The government of Ontario and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Research and Innovation Cooperation - creating a strategic alliance to promote scientific, technological and industrial research, as well as cooperative commercialization ventures.

A key outcome of this MOU is an exciting funding program, the Ontario-China Research and Innovation Fund (OCRIF). Since 2011, Ontario and China have each provided funding for 18 academic and industry collaboration innovative research projects.

The program supports focused collaborations between researchers and innovative companies in Ontario and China to generate positive economic, technological, scientific and social impacts for both jurisdictions.

The areas of focus for 2015 OCRIF:

• Soil remediation related technologies

“Colour vision assessment and operational requirements for military aircrew”

Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) is conducting a project on aircrew vision requirements and assessment. One focus area within this project is to investigate novel methods of colour vision assessment and the operational requirements for colour vision in military aircrew. The first objective is to evaluate several computer-based tests of colour vision that have recently become available. The second objective is to conduct an empirical study on operational vision requirements for colour vision in aircrew.
The Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) has entered into partnership with the Government of Canada to procure Research and Development Services related to the mental, social and physical wellbeing of active military members, Veterans and their families. CIMVHR is seeking Notices of Interest from qualified researchers or a research team to enter into a contract with CIMVHR to produce this Work.

The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:
 A PhD in a relevant discipline or MD;
 Demonstrated expertise and experience with conducting the type of vision testing required by the scope of work;
 Demonstrated experience in research design and analysis appropriate to the scope of work;

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) announces the availability of three funding opportunities for Research Fellowships in Transformative Pathology. These awards have been created to increase the opportunities for training pathologists in the area of molecular diagnostic pathology in Ontario. “THE DETERMINANTS OF A SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION FROM MILITARY TO CIVILIAN LIFE”.

The Office of the Veterans Ombudsman (OVO) would like to conduct a small qualitative study to assist in defining the determinants of successful transition outcomes for medically releasing Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members. Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada for 15 years. Working with 60 universities, thousands of companies, and both federal and provincial governments, we build partnerships that support industrial and social innovation in Canada. One of these partnerships is with Own the Podium (OTP).

OTP’s Focus on Innovation:
The purpose of the current partnership between OTP and Mitacs is to build on the momentum gained through OTP’s high-performance sport research initiative supporting Olympic and Paralympic podium performances. A contribution to Canada’s success in Vancouver, London, and Sochi was including talented graduate and post-graduate researchers in order to solve sport performance questions about how we could ‘Own the Podium.’ These interns will be the conduit between the Canadian national teams, sport institutes, and universities to bring together a winning equation for future Olympic and Paralympic Games. The results will impact podium performances and will also contribute to healthy and active lifestyles across the country.

Proposal for Graduate and Post Graduate Support:
OTP and Mitacs developed a partnership through Mitacs’ Accelerate and Elevate programs, which support the brightest PhD and postdoctoral candidates conducting research in high-performance sport. These interns share their time between academic, industrial, and sports facilities tying together the major elements of the Canadian sport-research ecosystem.

All projects must have clear potential for economic impact to Canada and therefore must likely include a Canadian for-profit partner, where the intern will spend at least 25 percent of his/her time.

The current call for projects follows an initial pilot between OTP and Mitacs in 2014-15? that saw the funding of four projects, with a combined value of $200,000+ and each spanned two to three years. Up to 10 projects will be selected for funding in the current round.

The Canadian Forces Health Services Group (CF H Svcs Gp) aims to compare the annual health care cost inflation rate for a Canadian civilian cohort, age and sex matched with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), with the overall annual health care cost inflation rate in Canada over a ten year period ending in 2014. If data permits the Canadian civilian cohort should also be matched based on employment factors. The CF H Svcs Gp requires a qualified researcher or research team to conduct this analysis and report on the results according to pre-determined criteria.

The Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) has entered into partnership with the Government of Canada to procure Research and Development Services related to the mental, social and physical wellbeing of active military members, Veterans and their families. All applications for the FY15 MSRP funding opportunities are expected to address at least one of the following aspects of MS symptoms: Pathophysiology, Measurement, and Treatment/Patient Care. Symptoms may include pain, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, visual impairment, motor impairment, impaired mobility, loss of bladder control, and sexual dysfunction.
