A KRESCENT program Post-Doctoral Fellowship is an “in-training” award intended for applicants with a PhD, MD or equivalent degree. The objective is to attract and foster young investigators to initiate and/or continue training in kidney research.

An awardee may not be in receipt of another major personnel award at the same time as holding the Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the KRESCENT program. However, the KRESCENT program will consider approving supplemental funding if a minor stipend has been provided from a local or provincial funding agency.

The KRESCENT program New Investigator Award is awarded to individuals who have clearly demonstrated excellence during their pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training in kidney disease. The Award provides salary support for up to three years of the faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or its equivalent at a Canadian University.

The purpose of this award is to assist such an individual to become established as a fully independent investigator in the field of kidney disease.

Preference may be given to candidates who have been awarded and successfully completed a KRESCENT program Post Doctoral Fellowship or Allied Health Doctoral Scholarship.

Application for this award must be initiated by the university or the institution at which the candidate will conduct the proposed research. The university or institution is expected to guarantee the applicant appropriate academic rank and to provide adequate space and facilities for the investigator’s research, commensurate with the status of the individual in terms of experience and level of support by the Program.

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to build capacity in ethics as it applies to health (including health research, health promotion and maintenance, clinical care, population and public health, health systems and services, policy and governance) by encouraging applications from new investigators as well as established investigators new to the field of health ethics.

It is expected that this targeted investment will enable researchers to embark on research in health ethics and prepare to become competitive in other CIHR funding opportunities.

Objectives

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:

• To support new investigators in the field of health ethics;
• To support established investigators new to the field of health ethics;
• To promote conceptual and/or empirical research from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives.

Relevant Research Areas

In order to be relevant, a systematic analysis of ethics issues associated with health (health research, health promotion and maintenance, clinical care, population and public health, health systems and services, policy and governance) must be a significant focus of the proposed study. Scientific, social or legal issues, if addressed, should expand the discussion or understanding of ethical issues.

The Northern Contaminants Program (NCP) engages Northerners and scientists in researching and monitoring of long-range contaminants in the Canadian Arctic, that is, contaminants that are transported to the Arctic through atmospheric and oceanic processes from other parts of the world and which remain in the Arctic environment and build up in the food chain.

The data generated by the NCP is used to assess ecosystem and human health, and the findings of these assessments are used to address the safety and security of traditional country foods that are important to the health and traditional lifestyles of Northerners and northern communities. The findings also inform policy, resulting in action to eliminate contaminants from long-range sources.

The NCP is now accepting funding proposals for 2016–2017.

BWF’s Innovation in Regulatory Science Awards provide up to $500,000 over five years to academic investigators developing new methodologies or innovative approaches in regulatory science that will ultimately inform the regulatory decisions the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and others make.

The joint CLA/CTS/ERS Peter Macklem Fellowship is a fellowship program to build capacity and expertise in the area of respiratory health and to promote excellence in research through 1-year funding opportunities towards research training and research projects in Canada or Europe. The CLA-CTS/ERS Peter Macklem Fellowship award is reviewed with the CLA-CTS Fellowship competition.

Eligibility
For candidates going to Canada
This award must be held at a Canadian institution.

To be eligible for a CLA/CTS/ERS Peter Macklem Fellowship Award the:

• Candidate should be either a member of the CTS or of the ERS, independently from the mobility scheme applied for (incoming to Europe or to Canada).
• Candidate should be actively engaged in respiratory research/practice and have appropriate scientific or medical qualifications. Candidates must be postgraduates holding a university degree in the field of respiratory medicine/science (MD, MSc, PhD, MD-PhD) or equivalent. As a minimum requirement candidates need to have graduated with an MD or MSc or equivalent degree at the time of application. In addition, candidates may also be qualified healthcare professionals (non-MD) working in respiratory medicine/health (nurses, physiotherapists, respiratory function technologists, allied respiratory health professionals).
• Candidate must possess appropriate professional qualifications and experience according to the specific Fellowship applied for.

Eligibility
Priority will be given to a Canadian citizen, permanent Canadian resident or landed immigrant. These awards are normally held at Canadian institutions.

To be eligible for a CLA/CTS Fellowship or Studentship Award the:

• Applicant and supervisor must be CTS members.
• Studentship applicants - should be enrolled or accepted in a graduate (thesis based) program at the Doctoral level at a Canadian academic institution. Individuals who have applied to a graduate program but have not received acceptance may apply for a Studentship award. The award, however, will be conditional on acceptance into the program.
• Fellowship applicants - should be working under supervision of a faculty member at an accredited Canadian academic institution. Under special circumstances, an applicant may pursue a fellowship in another country; however, the applicant must justify why he/she could not find the same kind of training in Canada and he/she must have plans to pursue a career in research in Canada.
