Background: Joint Research Centre

The JRC plays a key role at multiple stages of the policy cycle. It works closely with other EC departments, EU institutions and agencies, as well as with scientific partners and policy organisations in Europe and internationally. It also has close links with the science for policy ecosystems in the 27 EU Member States at all levels, including their regional and local dimensions.

Through its Scientific Directorates and five scientific sites based in Italy, Germany, Belgium the Netherlands and Spain, it offers scientific expertise and competencies from a wide range of scientific disciplines in support of the policy priorities of the EC.

The JRC’s areas of competence include energy, mobility and climate, sustainable resources, societal resilience and security, health and food, a fair and sustainable economy, data and digital transformation, innovation in science and policymaking, and nuclear safety and security. Public Safety Canada's Research Security Centre presents an essential Safeguarding Research Workshop on October 1 from 11 AM to 1:00 pm, with lunch provided afterwards. Led by Jennifer Weese, Regional Advisor for Ontario and Nunavut, this session equips scientists and researchers with crucial knowledge to protect their research assets and intellectual property from emerging threats. Participants will learn to identify risk indicators in dual-use research, technology, and materials while gaining access to practical mitigation tools and strategies that prevent misuse of their work. Jennifer brings extensive expertise in implementing the National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships (NSGRP) and the Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC), serving as the vital link between the research community and federal agencies on research security matters. The workshop maintains strict confidentiality protocols—no recordings or AI note-taking features are permitted as the session is not for attribution. About the Speaker

Jennifer Weese is a Regional Advisor at Public Safety Canada’s Research Security Centre, responsible for the regions of Ontario and Nunavut, she serves as a point of contact between the research community and federal government departments and agencies on matters related to research security. Jennifer's role includes raising awareness of research security issues within a collaborative network of academic, industry, and government stakeholders, advising on the implementation of the National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships (NSGRP) and the Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC). Additionally, she facilitates Safeguarding Science sessions and develops tools to inform researchers on topics related to research security.
