Undergraduate Marking Assistant Position

The Department of Women’s Studies requires 1 Undergraduate Marking Assistant during the Winter 2015 Term. Position may include help with course development.
Maximum of 44 hours for the Semester
Rate of Pay: $17.45 per hour, including vacation pay.
Qualifications: Completion of WS 1100 and at least one 3rd or 4th year WS Core Course. Previous experience as a marking assistant is an asset.

Former Women's Studies Student Publishes Book - Black Sheep Motherhood
A former student of our first-year class, Jane Werner, has published Black Sheep Motherhood with FriesenPress. The book is a funny and educational account of her trials and tribulations with the medical system during her pregnancy. The Department would like to congratulate Ms. Werner on her great accomplishment, and for having the courage and fortitude to stand up for her mothering rights!
Congratulations to the 2014 Helen E.H. Smith Memorial Award Winners in Women's Studies
The Department of Women's Studies would like to congratulate Valeria Panina and Rachel Ball on receiving the 2014 Helen E.H. Smith Memorial Award. This award goes to a Women's Studies Major or Joint Major who obtained the highest mark in Women's Studies 1100 in the previous academic year.

Thesis Adviser: Dr. Jennifer Jarman
I am currently conducting research for my Thesis project on the Poverty Reduction Act, 2009 and what this piece of legislation, passed under the McGuinty Liberal Government, means for Northern Ontario women and their families who struggle with poverty and/or violence.
My research will ultimately aim to investigate the structural violence, economic and other social barriers facing low-income and other marginalized groups of women after the dissolution of abusive relationships in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Coupling Social theory with a Feminist analysis, I intend to analyze the current state of poverty in Northern Ontario and the implications of the increasing rates of police reported violent crimes on women in Thunder Bay, Ontario. By focusing on the Poverty Reduction Act, I will be able to shine light onto what must be done to enhance the lives of women and children living with poverty and/or violence.
