As more publishers and funders, including the Tri-Council of Canada, introduce research data management plan (RDM) requirements, it is a good time to get up to speed. In this workshop, we will cover the basics of RDM and research data deposit. This will include exposure to resources and tools to support you throughout your work, especially using Lakehead Dataverse for your research data management.

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

describe research data management (RDM)
recognize the importance of a good RDM practice
identify deposit-ready data practices
understand how to use Borealis (Lakehead Dataverse) for data deposit and open data publishing

WUSEP Guest Speaker - Dr. Katie Mitchell-Koch: "Enzyme Solvation: Connections among Structure and Dynamics"

Event Date:
Friday, September 19, 2025 - 2:30pm to 4:30pm EDT
Event Location:
ATAC 3006

Abstract: The solvation layer around biomolecules is an intrinsic, yet often overlooked, partner in protein structure-dynamics and function. It has been observed both spectroscopically and in simulations that the dynamics of water in the hydration layer around proteins varies by location. What role does the heterogeneity in hydration dynamics play in protein structure-function-dynamics? Using molecular dynamics simulations, we have characterized the dynamics and structure of the hydration layer around micelles and proteins, gaining an understanding of how surface interactions influence the hydration shell. We have also characterized protein dynamics and solvation layer properties in a series of organic solvents, using the solvent-compatible enzymes Candida antarctica lipase B and porcine pancreatic lipase. The results in organic solvent hint at strategies for non-aqueous biocatalysis, as well as serving as a “character foil” to water, shedding light on the hydration layer’s role in protein function.

Film Premiere: A Tale of Two Qallunaat

Event Date:
Saturday, September 20, 2025 - 7:00pm to 11:00pm EDT
Event Location:
Definitely Superior Art Gallery, 115 Cumberland St. N.

The Department of History welcomes students, faculty and staff to the premiere of A Tale of Two Qallunaat, a documentary film by Lakehead professor Kelly Saxberg at the 21st annual Vox Popular Film Festival on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at Definitely Superior Art Gallery, 115 Cumberland St. N., Thunder Bay.

This 48-minute moving film, narrated by Martha Flaherty, tells the story of two women artists from Thunder Bay—Sheila Burnford and Susan Ross—who travelled to Pond Inlet in the early 1970s. Through their writings, film footage, and hundreds of sketches, they left a lasting artistic and cultural legacy in the Arctic. The documentary revisits these works in the spirit of reconciliation, weaving together the voices of Elders and youth, and exploring deep family connections to Robert Flaherty’s Nanook of the North.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with producer, cinematographer and editor, Kelly Saxberg.
