Develop practical knowledge and search skills for library research in Education at the graduate level. This session is
offered online via Zoom. During this session you will learn about the different types of information resources specific to Education, how they can be located, and how to develop search strategies to use with these search tools. You will also learn about resources available to assist you with APA 7 citation and you will be introduced to Zotero, a citation management tool.

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • understand information resources that are available for researchers in Education.
  • identify peer-reviewed and scholarly sources.
  • learn to find Education search tools and develop search strategies using these search tools.
  • locate APA 7 Citation resources to help you to cite.

Introduction to Qualitative Data Analysis in NVivo

Developing a skill for analyzing qualitative data (e.g., interviews, texts, scraped web contents) is essential for researchers in social sciences and humanities who focus on data other than quantitative data. This workshop is for beginners as it will introduce the participants to the importance of qualitative data analysis, and how to get started with using NVivo software.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • understand the importance of qualitative data
  • get familiarized with NVivo interface and functionality
  • upload recorded interviews, audio files, pdf, word documents and other file formats into NVivo
  • get started with developing codes
  • identify alternative (free) qualitative data analysis software.

Note: This workshop will be held in person at the Chancellor Paterson Library computer lab, and registration is required.

Qualitative Data Analysis with NVivo Made Easy: Practical Applications

If you are already familiar with NVivo and its functionalities, but want to get more nuanced understanding of coding qualitative data and developing codes into themes, this two-hour in person workshop is for you. You will be introduced to a step-by-step practical hands-on approach on how to use NVivo software for qualitative data analysis, and how you can prepare and report/discuss your themes in qualitative research.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • develop qualitative data codes
  • categorize codes into themes
  • refine, group, and name themes
  • develop analytical themes
  • visualize qualitative data in NVivo (e.g., word tree, word cloud, thematic tables)
  • export your codebook and visualized figures into MS Word

Note: This workshop will be held in person at the Chancellor Paterson Library computer lab, and registration is required. Participants will have opportunities for follow-up in person appointments with the facilitator to imrprove areas of weaknesses.

Citation Management Using Zotero - Research Made Easy

Zotero is a free and convenient tool that can be used to help you manage information for your research, insert citations into your writing and easily create bibliographies. This session will provide an overview of how Zotero can support your work throughout the research process, with hands-on opportunities to practice using the tool.

After attending this workshop, you will have learned how to use Zotero to:

  • save time with the research process
  • create better citations and bibliographies
  • organise all the books / articles you find during the research process
  • use advanced features in Zotero

Dr. Badewa is a faculty member at University College of the North (The Pas, Manitoba) and an adjunct faculty member at Lakehead. He holds a PhD in social and ecological sustainability from the University of Waterloo, MSc from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and BSc in soil science from Obafemi Awolowo University (Nigeria). Emmanuel is passionate about teaching and researching natural resources and agri-environmental science for real-world applications. His research primarily focuses on soil science and security, sustainability, soil ecosystem services, water resources management, and climate change.

Book Launch with Margaret Schweitzer

Alumnus Margaret Schweitzer will be launching her latest book with a public presentation at the Thunder Bay Museum on Donald St. Sunday, April 13, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. Passages will be read by the author, followed by questions and discussion with the audience. The book is a memoir of her late grandfather, a man with ties to the Lakehead, and who served in both world wars of the 20th Century.
