Thesis Title: Photonic Sensor based on Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering for the Detection of Trace Chemicals

Committee Members:
Dr. Gautam Das (supervisor)
Dr. Mark Gallagher
Dr. Justin Jiang
Dr. Nisha Rani Agarwal (external)

A three-dimensional (3D) tapered optical fiber-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering
(SERS) sensor for detecting trace chemicals was manufactured. The developed system was capable of detecting toxic chemicals, such as, rhodamine 6G (R6G) and crystal violet (CV) at Picomolar (pM) levels. A Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an optical microscope were used to characterize the SERS substrate. The unique characteristics of the fabricated substrate were determined for its practical applications. The designed sensor was used in the real-time detection of trace chemicals. In addition, the manufactured sensor has potential applications in biosensing.

Everyone is welcome
