This free public lecture will be presented by Dr. Phillip Mackey, a well-known metallurgist in the field of non-ferrous extractive metallurgy and a member of the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame.

Phillip Mackey is one of the few Canadians to have advanced the development of not one but two significant copper smelting technologies that have benefited copper metallurgical plants around the world. He co-developed the Noranda Reactor Process and co-invented the Noranda Converting Process, which has produced more than 4 million tonnes of copper since the late 1990s and remains the world’s third most productive copper converting technology.

He played a key role in the development of the basic engineering design for the world’s largest continuous copper smelting reactor in South America. He was involved in a number of due diligence studies on worldwide mining, milling and metallurgical projects in copper, nickel sulphide and nickel laterite projects while working with the former Noranda-Falconbridge. His work here included new developments for processing lateritic nickel deposits, and concluding technology agreements with other nations, notably Chile.

A Director of Hazen Research of Golden, Colorado, USA, Phillip Mackey currently consults for mining and metallurgical companies worldwide including BHP, Anglo American, Codelco-Chile and Rio. He is Metallurgical Advisor, Horizonte Minerals Inc., which is developing the Araguaia ferro-nickel project, the Vermelho ferro-nickel project and the Vermelho HPAL nickel-cobalt project, all in Brazil. He is also Metallurgical Advisor to Premium Nickel Resources developing the former BCL Ni-Cu properties in Botswana.

A newly released academic book edited by a university professor and a health lawyer is making an important contribution to Canadian public policy on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) while examining opportunities for advocacy for health equity.

Edited by Dr. Jaro Kotalik, Chair of the Executive Committee of the Lakehead University Centre for Health Care Ethics and a Professor at NOSM University, and David Shannon, a lawyer and disability advocate, the book Medical Assistance in Dying in Canada: Key multidisciplinary perspectives is being published by Springer in the International Library of Bioethics.

“With over 30 multidisciplinary chapter authors, including Canadian legal authorities, scholars, and clinicians with affiliations to over a dozen universities, this book offers the first comprehensive overview of MAiD,” Dr. Kotalik said.

“It delves into complexities and problems, and also provides various recommendations on how the MAiD program could be improved while suggesting relevant research topics that could be explored.”

A national launch of the book is scheduled to take place in Ottawa on Tuesday, Sept.  19 at 7 pm at Cardus, located at 45 Rideau St., which will also be livestreamed.

A Thunder Bay book launch will follow in October.

The book is available online, at the Lakehead University Bookstore, and in the Lakehead University and NOSM University libraries.

“The publication of this kind of scholarship demonstrates the leadership that Lakehead University and NOSM University are known for. This is a wonderful accomplishment, occurring on the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Centre for Health Care Ethics,” Dr. Kotalik said.

You can learn more about the book and secure your digital or paper copy through the Springer website.

You can register for the in-person or the on-line event here.

We are very excited to announce that registration for our 7th conference – Recentering Food Law and Policy: Connecting People and Place – is now open!

The Canadian Association for Food Law and Policy (http://foodlaw.ca/) will be hosting its 7th Annual Conference from November 2-4, 2023. We look forward to welcoming all of you (in-person!) to the Bora Laskin School of Law at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. We are thrilled to be able to gather in person again, after a few years of remote conferences.

For our 7th conference – and our first above the 45th parallel – we will explore questions of interconnectedness in food systems. More specifically, we will explore how interconnections may be experienced differently when examined from different perspectives and vantage points. We will delve into what we can learn about the state of our food systems and our modes of governance by foregrounding northern, rural, remote and Indigenous communities in our analysis. We will also unpack how our relationships with the natural environment impact food systems, and conversely how our relationships with food impact the natural environment.

Our carefully planned program for this year will include panels, a film screening, workshops for both academics and students, as well as placed-based excursions. Our amazing panelists come from across the country and will present on topics ranging from the regulation of wild meats, to the unique challenges faced by rural, remote and Indigenous food systems, to new food technologies.

Please head to our website (http://foodlaw.ca/conference-2023) to find details about the panels, events and of course our speakers.
