ABOUT THE BOOK

It's in our food, our cosmetics, our fuel and our bodies. Palm oil, found in half of supermarket products, has shaped our world. Max Haiven uncovers how the gears of capitalism are literally and metaphorically lubricated by this ubiquitous elixir.

From its origins in West Africa to today's Southeast Asian palm oil superpowers, Haiven's sweeping, experimental narrative takes us on a global journey that includes looted treasures, the American system of mass incarceration, the history of modern art and the industrialisation of war. Beyond simply calling for more consumer boycotts, he argues for recognising in palm oil humanity's profound potential to shape our world beyond racial capitalism and neo-colonial dispossession.

One part history, one part dream, one part theory, one part montage, this kaleidoscopic and urgent book asks us to recognise the past in the present and to seize the power to make a better world.

THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE GRADUATE SEMINAR 2022
Guest Speaker Series Presented By:

Dr. Karthik Pattabiraman
"In Autonomy We Trust: Building Trustworthy Autonomous Systems for a Safer Future"

Friday, October 7th, 2022
11:30 am

Abstract:
The autonomy revolution promises to radically improve our lives in the near future. From autonomous vehicles (i.e., self-driving cars) to drones (UAVs) and autonomous robots in our homes and workplaces, autonomous systems have immense potential to take over routine and tedious tasks, and maximize our productivity and well-being. Unfortunately, as recent incidents have shown, failures and security vulnerabilities of these systems can erode our society’s trust in them, which can prevent us from realizing their immense benefits. In this talk, I will argue that it is vitally important to build autonomous systems that are trustworthy by design, in order to engender our society’s trust in them. I will provide some examples of the research we are doing in my group to build trustworthy autonomous systems, and develop a scientific basis for the same. These projects address the issues of reliability, resilience, and adaptivity, which are the three essential components of trustworthiness. Finally, I will conclude by presenting my vision of the future challenges and opportunities in this area.

Dr. Karthik Pattabiraman is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He received his MS and PhD in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC) in 2004 and 2009, and spent a postdoctoral year at Microsoft Research (MSR), Redmond before joining UBC in 2010. His research interests are in dependability, security, and software engineering. Karthik has won multiple awards such as the Inaugural Rising Star in Dependability Award, 2020, from the IEEE and the IFIP, the distinguished alumnus award from the University of Illinois (UIUC), CS department, 2018, and multiple UBC-wide awards for excellence in research and mentoring. Together with his students and collaborators, he has published over 100 papers, many of which have received distinguished paper awards at venues such as DSN and ICSE. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a distinguished member of the ACM, and the vice-chair of the IFIP Working Group on dependable computing and fault-tolerance (WG 10.4).
