The objective of Idea to Innovation (I2I) grants is to accelerate the pre-competitive development of promising technology originating from the university and college sector, and to promote its transfer to a new or established Canadian company. I2I grants provide funding to college and university faculty members to support research and development projects with recognized technology transfer potential. This is achieved through defined phases by providing crucial assistance in the early stages of technology validation and market connection.

The Brain Health Medicines Scholar Award provides funding and drug development support to researchers whose work aims to treat, prevent or cure Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The award includes:

• One-year grant
• $100,000 or $150,000 with appropriate justification 
• Potential to renew for a second year based on milestones achieved 
• Dedicated Project Manager for the duration of the award
• Drug development, commercial strategy and business development support from Harrington's Therapeutics Development Center experts
• Opportunity to quality for up to $400,000 in additional funding and drug development support

Distinguishing Features of the HFSP Research Grant Program

HFSP Research Grants support innovative basic research into fundamental biological problems with emphasis placed on novel and interdisciplinary approaches that involve scientific exchanges across national and disciplinary boundaries (see guidelines).

Participation of scientists from disciplines outside the traditional life sciences such as biophysics, chemistry, computational biology, computer science, engineering, mathematics, nanoscience or physics is recommended because such collaborations have opened up new approaches for understanding the complex structures and regulatory networks that characterize living organisms, their evolution and interactions.

Research grants are provided for teams of scientists from different countries who wish to combine their expertise in innovative approaches to questions that could not be answered by individual laboratories. Preliminary results are not required and applicants are expected to develop new lines of research through the research collaboration.

It is understood that such research inherently contains risks and HFSP expects that teams of applicants address the risks and outline mitigation strategies for their research in case of failure and how they intend to achieve their goals.

Applications for applied research, including medical research typically funded by national medical research bodies, will be deemed ineligible (see guidelines).

Two types of Grant are available: Research Grants – Early Career and Research Grants – Program.

We are seeking proposals for projects that employ novel approaches to enhance the collection, integration and use of cancer data in Canada. Projects funded should demonstrate specific actions that can be scaled and sustained to improve the cancer data ecosystem in Canada. These may be pilot or proof-of-concept projects that show incremental progress towards one of these three priorities or full-scale, implementation studies having completed a successful pilot that are aligned with the identified priorities in the cancer data strategy. For the purpose of this call, cancer data is being defined as either patient data or population-based data related to cancer.    

Projects that focus on solutions to other issues related to cancer data are eligible, as long as the issue being addressed is justified in the application and addresses concerns related to accessibility, completeness, quality and/or timeliness of cancer data in Canada.  

This award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing knowledge mobilization (KMb) as a profession, and is named in honor of Peter Levesque, a pioneer in the field. Among many achievements in his career, Peter founded the Institute for Knowledge Mobilization and launched The Canadian Knowledge Mobilization Forum. His work in the field has set the stage for much of the subsequent knowledge mobilization work across Canada. 

While there are awards for KMb scholarship and graduate student research, there are no awards recognizing contributions of professional staff to diverse aspects of knowledge mobilization. We’re excited to fill this gap and celebrate those who have dedicated their careers to advancing the field.

Partnership Engage Grants are expected to respond to the objectives of the Research partnerships program. However, Partnership Engage Grants cannot respond exclusively to the objectives of the Research partnerships program.

These grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. The small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through Partnership Engage Grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. In addressing an organization-specific need, challenge and/or opportunity, these partnerships let non-academic organizations and postsecondary researchers access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:

• to support planning activities, partnership development and to increase understanding of the health research landscape that will contribute to the advancement of research consistent with the mandate of CIHR; and
• to support dissemination events and activities that focus on the communication of health research evidence to the appropriate researcher or knowledge-user audiences, tailoring the message and medium as appropriate.

he Health System Impact Fellowship objectives are to:

• Support impact-oriented career paths and elevate the career readiness of doctoral trainees and post-doctoral researchers studying health services and policy research (HSPR) or related fields by supporting embedded research opportunities within health system organizations (e.g., public, private for-profit, not-for-profit, and Indigenous health organizations) outside of the traditional university environment, with enriched competency development (e.g., leadership, project management) and opportunities for mentorship and networking.
• Expand and enrich the traditional doctoral and post-doctoral training environment by engaging health system organizations in preparing a cadre of emerging leaders, inclusive of those who have historically faced barriers in the research ecosystem, including, but not limited to, those marginalized by gender, Indigenous Peoples, communities impacted by racism, persons with disabilities, and members of 2SLGBTQI+ communities, for impact-oriented careers in academic and health system organizations; and
• Provide health system organizations with direct opportunities to realize and harness the benefits that research-trained individuals can bring to such organizations for rapid learning, improvement and evidence-informed decision-making that will advance the Quadruple Aim and health equity.
