Own the Podium Grants
Mitacs is once again partnering with Innovation 4 Gold on their Own the Podium grants! OTP is a long-running partnership focused on leveraging innovation to improve Canadian athlete performance and make Canada a world leader in high-performance sport at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Since 2015 Mitacs and OTP have partnered on 30 projects and funded 180 IUs- you can check out some of the past projects here: Own the Podium | Mitacs
What is it/ What’s new for 2023?
Through the two step I4G call Own the Podium will provide the matching funding for eligible projects to apply for Mitacs Accelerate- in this project structure OTP acts as a named partner on the applications and stays engaged with the administration and delivery of the project.
Projects must be led by a National Sports Organization to show pull from the sports community to use the results. Projects may include additional partners that round out the capacity to execute the utilize the project results ex. technology companies or NFPs active the space.
Innovation 4 Gold includes 3 streams:
- Spark- small projects that will not flow through Mitacs and do not require an academic partner.

- Accelerate- Follows standard OTP partnership model. bolts on to our existing Accelerate Program- follows eligibility for PhD and PDF students- multiyear and multi student projects are possible.

- Technovate- National Computer Vision Research Cluster (new for 2023!)- In an effort to unite their network around key challenges OTP has launched this new funding stream to enable the development of a cluster model of funding a collaboration- projects developed through this initiative will be connected and supported through an intentional network led by OTP.
Funding is provided to projects that focus on developing new computer vision technology or significantly improve existing technology use in high-performance sport. OTP is focusing on computer vision, specifically the area of POSE estimation and motion capture.
Bolts on to our existing Accelerate Program- follows eligibility for PhD and PDF students- multiyear and multi student projects are possible.

Timeline:
Program launch- this week at the SPIN Summit in Vancouver OTP presented the program to the NSOs and other stakeholders
January 31, 2023 Expressions of Interest due via the online forms available via the program pages (embedded above)
by March 1, 2023 OTP notifies successful applicants and invites them to submit a full application to Mitacs
Spring 2023- Applicants submit their full applications to Mitacs
September 1, 2023- projects start
