Fellowship: Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) Program

How to Apply:

The objective of the Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) program is to foster the development of research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, recognizing and empowering the next generation of outstanding research trainees and innovators, knowledge workers, creative thinkers and researchers. It aims to do so by providing funding and flexibility needed to contribute to building world-class research capacity and drive Canada’s prosperity and competitiveness.

Please note the internal deadline for the submission of CIHR Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) applications to the Office of Research Services is September 2, 2026.  Faculty members who will be supporting a candidate for a CPRA should be aware of the following as well: Candidates who are successful in securing a CPRA are considered by Lakehead University as being postdoctoral award recipients.

For postdoctoral fellow award recipients, in addition to the PDF award fellowship, Mandatory Employment Related Costs (MERCs) in the amount of 2.5% must also be paid.  However, please note that paying the 2.5% from the fellowship itself is not allowed in the case of Tri-agency postdoctoral awards and in such cases, the required 2.5% must be covered by the Lakehead supervisor using an eligible grant, or another source.  Therefore, Lakehead University faculty members should be aware of this potential commitment/cost when agreeing to take on a CPRA applicant.
