Whale Science for Tomorrow

How to Apply:

The Government of Canada is committed to taking actions to protect endangered whale populations. Through funding provided in Budget 2018 and the Government of Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) are partnering to support research that will enhance scientific research on marine mammals in Canada with a focus on southern resident killer whales, North Atlantic right whales, and the Saint Lawrence Estuary population of beluga whales. In particular, research on whale health (such as effects of contaminants) and condition (in the context of threat identification), effectiveness of threat mitigations, and whale assessment methodologies (including innovative survey technologies) are directly relevant to DFO’s programs and priorities.

The anticipated budget for this initiative is $3 million, and individual proposals should not exceed $1 million over their duration. Part of the funding will be administered directly by DFO and must respect the program requirements of the DFO Ocean and Freshwater Science Contribution Program. Under these requirements, DFO’s contribution must not exceed 50% of eligible costs of any project for private sector recipients and 75% of eligible costs of any project for other recipients. NSERC’s funds will be administered according to its use of grant funds guidelines, outlined in the Tri-Agency Financial Administration Guide. The maximum level (stacking limit) of total government assistance (federal, provincial, and municipal assistance for the same eligible expenditures) must not exceed 100% of eligible expenditures.

Please note that only one application per university will be accepted under this call.

Early Career Faculty (ECF) program

How to Apply:

The Early Career Faculty (ECF) Grants are a unique opportunity for early-career faculty investigators to contribute to and participate in MEOPAR’s broad interdisciplinary, multi-institutional research effort, thereby growing and extending their network of collaborators and interactions with stakeholders. MEOPAR recognized the need for support of early career investigators (who received their first faculty appointment in the last five years) to maximize their considerable potential.

This Call is specifically targeted at individuals early in their academic research careers.

The ECF program provides individual research grants; therefore, the only investigator to receive funds on the project will be the Principal Investigator (PI). Only one application per PI will be considered. There are between 12-15 grants available under this program. The maximum funding level available for each grant is $100,000. MEOPAR will support research projects that are two years in length, beginning in April 2019. Annual funding will be split in half, with the first half administered in April and the second in October.

Globalink Research Award

How to Apply:

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award provides $6,000 for senior undergraduate and graduate students in Canada to conduct 12–24-week research projects at universities overseas.

In the warm and gentle days of summer, planning for a winter abroad may feel premature. But much like the colder days, deadlines often arrive sooner than we’d like them to.

One such deadline is one for Mitacs’s Globalink Research Award (GRA). Students wishing to travel in January 2019 with $6,000 in GRA support should submit their applications by September 30, 2018. Students can submit applications at any time, but are encouraged to apply at least 16 weeks prior to their planned departure.

Destinations now include Australia, China, EU member countries, Japan, and the United States — the complete list of eligible destinations is on the award web page, along with a searchable “Find A Professor” list of professors interested in hosting students from Canada.

If you have any questions, contact international@mitacs.ca. We look forward to receiving your applications.
