Canadian Blood Services is pleased to announce its 2017 Blood Efficiency Accelerator Award Program Competition. The objective of the Program is to improve the efficient and appropriate utilization of blood products, while maintaining the safety of the blood system.

NSERC's PromoScience Program offers financial support for organizations working with young Canadians to promote an understanding of science and engineering (including mathematics and technology). Organizations may request funds for up to three years at a time.

PromoScience supports hands-on learning experiences for young students and their science teachers. Grants may be used to cover improvements to program content or delivery, as well as for new programs and activities. Grants can also be used to cover operational costs such as salaries, travel, postage, materials and supplies, provided that they relate to the promotion of science and engineering. Note that grants may not be used to support research or program evaluations. Details on the eligibility of expenses are contained in the Use of Grant Funds section of the PromoScience Grants Guide. Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) is inviting proposals for a new $10 million Dream Team of top scientific investigators searching for new strategies to prevent or treat cancer. Canadian researchers are eligible.

Unlike other Dream Team grants offered by SU2C in recent years that focused on specific types of cancer, such as colorectal cancer or lung cancer, the new $10 million grant is open to any type of translational cancer research.

The SU2C Dream Team Translational Cancer Research Grant will fund a translational cancer research project that will address critical problems in patient care and deliver near-term patient benefit through investigation by a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, collaborative Dream Team of expert investigators, according to the “Call for Ideas” issued to the scientific community.

The ideas may focus on particular organ sites, patient populations (such as pediatrics), or on innovative methods of treatment. Projects must be designed to accelerate the application of new preventive, diagnostic, or therapeutic approaches to the clinic that lead to patient involvement within 2-3 years from the beginning of the grant. Proposals for a Dream Team research project must present plans indicating how the work will be translated into the clinic. The ideas should be based on perceived opportunities for success as well as high-priority areas with a critical need for rapid progress beyond current medical care.

A Letter of Intent (LOI) must be submitted by noon U.S. Eastern time on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, using the proposalCENTRAL website at https://proposalcentral.altum.com.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is seeking planning grant proposals from medical schools in the United States and Canada to create programs with the intent of increasing opportunities for the physician interested in a research career. 

This is a five-month planning grant (up to $30,000) to focus on developing a full proposal for submission to the Burroughs Wellcome Fund to create programs to increase the number M.D.’s who enter careers in research.

Planning grant proposals are due by September 29, 2017.

Initially the Fund will provide the planning grant to 20-25 institutions to develop full proposals for the award.  Up to 10 institutions will receive awards of $2.5 million ($500,000/year over five years) to institute their proposed activities.

SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships support the most promising Canadian new scholars in the social sciences and humanities, and assist them in establishing a research base at an important time in their research careers.

SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship proposals are expected to respond to the objectives of the Talent program.

SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships provide stipendiary support to recent PhD graduates who are:

• undertaking original research;
• publishing research findings;
• developing and expanding personal research networks;
• broadening their teaching experience;
• preparing for research-intensive careers within and beyond academia; and
• preparing to become competitive in national research grant competitions.

Fellowships will normally be awarded to candidates affiliated with a university other than that which awarded the PhD. SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship awards are tenable at Canadian or foreign universities and research institutions.

Defence Research Development Canada, is looking for a researcher to perform a proof-of-concept study to determine whether polygallate based small molecule drugs are effective as broad spectrum antiviral agents to mitigate the effects of Biothreat agents or emerging infectious diseases on the health of Canada’s Armed Forces.

Call for Expressions of Interest for capacity development of Myanmar’s think tanks

This call is open to independent policy research institutions (“think tanks”), based in Myanmar whose research is centered on national-level issues of democratic transition and economic development.

The think tank should have experience in assessing Myanmar’s policy context and have a track record of quality research and outreach capacities — or has the potential to conduct such research and analysis.

The candidate must be considered a credible organization by some policymakers and willing to expand contacts with government officials, media, and other policy actors to identify key issues, share research results, and stimulate policy debates in Myanmar.

The think tank should have a strong gender approach and promote gender equality through research.
