About the Event

Join us for an inspiring tour of Lakehead's new juried and featured art in the CASES Building! Select exhibitors will be on hand to discuss their works. You are invited to view a wide variety of creative pieces of art, chat with the artists about their creative processes, and learn about how arts and integrated research can engage, provoke and share research through different mediums. You are also very welcome to wander the other exhibition gallery spaces in the Bora Laskin Education Building and Lakehead International.

Admission is free and all are welcome!

  • Light refreshments will follow the tour.
  • Art tour with reception from 4:00-5:30.

Graduate Student Conference: Three Minute Research (3MR)

About the Event

The Three Minute Research (3MR) is an academic competition that cultivates graduate students' presentation and research communication skills, and challenges them to describe their research within three minutes to a general audience. The competition is open to all graduate students of Lakehead University, and they have to explain their research or scholarly/creative activity through a video presentation of up to three minutes.
 
Shaw Spotlight brings to life compelling human-interest stories from our communities in diverse short-form documentaries. We are proud to provide each category winner of Lakehead University’s 3MR competition an opportunity to be highlighted in a Shaw Spotlight feature. Each category winner will work with a Shaw Spotlight producer to tell their story and share their project, nationwide.

About the Event

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is National competition for thesis-based graduate students in which participants present their scholarly and creative activity, and its wider impact in 3 minutes or less. The challenge is to present complex research in an accessible and compelling way with the assistance of only one static slide. The competition celebrates exciting and innovative graduate student research while promoting communication, public speaking, and storytelling skills.

The Department of English at Lakehead University is pleased to present a public talk by Chelsea Vowel "Like a String of Beads/âniskôhôcikan: Indigenous Futurisms."

Chelsea Vowel is Métis from manitow-sâkahikan (Lac Ste. Anne) Alberta, residing in amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton). Parent to six children, she has a BEd, LLB, and MA. She is a Cree language instructor at the Faculty of Native studies at the University of Alberta. Chelsea is a public intellectual, writer, and educator whose work intersects language, gender, Métis self-determination, and resurgence. Author of Indigenous Writes: A Guide to First Nations, Métis & Inuit Issues in Canada, she and her co-host Molly Swain produce the Indigenous feminist sci-fi podcast Métis in Space, and co-founded the Métis in Space Land Trust.

About the Presentation

In partnership with Dilico Anishinabek Family Care and Children's Centre Thunder Bay, we will present on the implementation and pilot evaluation of the JoyPopTM app into mental health services for youth in Northwestern Ontario. We will also describe future research to test the effectiveness of the app as a tool for youth.

About the Speakers

Photo of Dr. Aislin MushquashDr. Aislin Mushquash, Department of Psychology

Dr. Aislin Mushquash is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Lakehead University. Her research program is focused on coping – the conscious or voluntary efforts used to regulate or manage one’s emotions, thoughts, behaviours, and physiological reactions in response to stress. Within this area, Dr. Mushquash’s work can be divided into research (a) examining predictors and consequences of maladaptive coping; and (b) implementing and evaluating innovative interventions to support adaptive coping. Dr. Mushquash has led the implementation and evaluation of the JoyPop TM mobile mental health app as a tool to support resilience and mental health among youth in Northwestern Ontario. Dr. Mushquash is a Registered Clinical Psychology and provides consultation, assessment, and treatment services for First Nations children, youth, and adults through Dilico Anishinabek Family Care.

Ishaq (Izzy) Malik is a Master’s student in the Clinical Psychology program at Lakehead University under the supervision of Dr. Aislin Mushquash in the Coping Research Lab. His research currently focuses on implementing and evaluating innovative interventions to support adaptive coping. Specific interests centre around the acceptance of mobile mental health apps and the associations between personality, coping, and mental health.

Jaidyn Charlton is a Master’s student in the Clinical Psychology program at Lakehead University under the supervision of Dr. Aislin Mushquash in the Coping Research Lab. Her current research is aimed at further understanding personality (e.g., psychopathy), coping, and stress in everyday life. She has experience supporting projects examining the JoyPop TM mental health app, childhood adversity, youth mental health, Indigenous mental health, help-seeking, resilience, substance use, attachment, and housing stabilization.
