 Kristin Mueller-Heaslip, soprano
2008 Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition Winner
Benjamin Mueller-Heaslip, piano

Kristin Mueller-Heaslip is known to Canadian audiences as an intelligent and sensitive performer of new and unusual music. She is a graduate of the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, where she studied piano with William Aide and voice with Jean MacPhail. In 2004 she created the role of Ciel in Judith Thompson's unique Enoch Arden in the Hope Shelter, which she later reprised in 2005 at the Toronto Theatre Centre and in 2007 at the Rosemary Branch Theatre in London, England. Other recent performances include a live performance of David Ogborn's new score for the silent film Metropolis; an appearance as soprano soloist in Alice Ping-Ye Ho's interdisciplinary music drama Bridge of One Hair; Exsultate, Jubilate with the Silverbirch String Quartet; Gyorgy Kurtag's monumental Kafka Fragments with violinist Christian Robinson; and the world premiere of Andrew Staniland's tampobata for singing pianist. Kristin performs regularly with her band, The Parkdale Revolutionary Orchestra, whose debut recording, Truth in the Dark, was released in 2007.
Composer and pianist Benjamin Mueller-Heaslip studied composition with Alfred Fisher and Marjan Mozetich at Queen's University and with Christos Hatzis at the University of Toronto.   As president of Earshot Concerts, a Toronto-based composers' collective, from 2002-2006 he was actively involved in the presentation of new music, including regular performances of his chamber and solo works.  In 2006, a wide-ranging exploration of different forms of music making, including improvisation, jazz, and popular music, resulted in the formation of his ensemble The Parkdale Revolutionary Orchestra as an innovative vehicle to present complex music to a broader audience. As a pianist, he has toured with iconic goth musician Karl Mohr and performs regularly with the shock-cabaret act Friendly Rich and the Lollipop People.

Derek Yaple-Schobert, piano

With a growing reputation for bringing classical music to wider audiences, award-winning, well-traveled pianist Derek Yaple-Schobert will guide newcomers as well as experienced concert goers on a memorable musical journey nuanced with engaging and insightful commentary.  The program features a broad spectrum of the immortals; the emotional pathos of Beethoven, the unearthly beauty of Schubert and the dazzling virtuosity of Franz Liszt.  Often infusing his recitals with a Scandinavian twist as well as Canadian content, Yaple-Schobert will also perform a set of variations on a Swedish folk tune by Erland von Koch, in addition to a short innovative works by Canadian composers Boudreau.  Several works on the program appear on his debut CD, Nordic Passion on sale at the recital.
