What do you like best about science at Lakehead?

Lakehead offers many opportunities to participate in first-hand research. The profs are always available for questions and they all seem to be top of the line. They have mastered both large and small class settings and recognize individuals rather than numbers. The ABMS program also perfectly matches my interests in terms of research and aspirations.

Why did you select your program?

I liked science in high school and wanted to pursue studies in multiple fields, but had a hard time deciding which one. ABMS is the best program in terms of interdisciplinary studies in the sciences. What I like most about it is that you start your first year very generally, but as the years pass you can narrow your studies into a specific area of interest. I am now focusing on microbiology and genetics but can still make time for chemistry.

I have also had many opportunities to pursue my own research through my project for NSERC USRA in 2010 and 2011 titled "Synthesis of therapeutic enediynes", my internship on environmentally persistant E.coli bacteria, and my honours project on bactericidal light on bacterial proteome.

What activities are you involved in outside the classroom?

I am currently trying to involve myself more with the chemistry and biology clubs. Both are managed by wonderful people, and I have thoroughly enjoyed volunteering and participating in the events. I try to play volleyball and exercise regularly but unfortunately, my program can be demanding and the time isn't always available. However, I always make time to enjoy reading the Manga series that I follow.

What are your career aspirations?

My next step in life is still a bit of a mystery. At one point, I wanted to apply to medical school, but I now find myself leaning more towards research. Currently, I plan to pursue a Master's degree with a focus on microbiology. However, I feel with the diversity of knowledge obtained from my studies in an interdisciplinary program, a lot of room is left for consideration. I hope to someday be able to make a major contribution to the advancement of science.
