The Biotechnology PhD candidate, Sarita Shrestha will present her research: Bioconversion of Agricultural Residues into Value-added Products by Pectinase-producing Bacteria and Expression of Pectinase Gene in E. coli for Biomass Valorization.

The world’s population is continuously increasing and waste production too. Thus, there has been a great challenge to reduce waste production that pollutes the environment, including air, water, and soil contamination which further creates adverse health effects such as eye infections, skin infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, and respiratory tract infections. Therefore, an effective disposal policy/method or waste management should be sought out. Conversely, microorganisms can exploit organic waste to produce value-added products, including enzymes, bioactive compounds, pectin, and more. The hydrolyzing enzymes such as pectinases, in turn, enhance juice, oil extraction, and plant biomass degradation. In addition, those agricultural wastes can be utilized for pectin, bioactive compound extraction, immobilization of bacteria, the adsorption of dye, compost production, and as the substrate for enzymes and reducing sugar production, which further can be used for various value-added products and bioethanol production. Overall, my study aims to utilize agro-wastes as substrate, indirectly leading to decreased environmental pollution, global warming, and related health issues. Ultimately, this study contributes to the bioconversion of waste into wealth by preserving the environment, economic and technological advancement, and health policy development.

Loved into Being - Book Launch and Panel Discussion on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD)

Wednesday, March 29, 2023 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm EDT
Event Location:
Goods and Co., Thunder Bay
Event Contact Name:
Dr. Katherine Kortes-Miller

Join us at Goods & Co Market, 7:00pm on Wednesday March 29th to celebrate this incredible story and have a local discussion about a national issue- Medical Assistance in Dying and its precursors- aging, illness, caregiving and grief.

Loved Into Being: Reflections on Stroke and Being Indestructible is a memoir written by Jill Bodak, a Thunder Bay local that follows her and her father through his three years of living post-stroke. This story is a portrait of a person who is fighting to recover enough of himself to end his life on his own terms.

On December 6th, 2022, Bill Bodak exercised his right to access Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), at home, surrounded by family. The night before his death, hundreds of friends, former students and family members gathered outside his home to light candles and wish him safe passage.

Since his death, this story has reached hundreds of readers, been featured on CBC's Superior Morning Show and a collection of podcasts, including Thunder Bay's "Disrupting Death" show with Dr. Kathy Kortes-Miller.

This evening Dr. Kathy Kortes-Miller, Dr. Katrina Ward and Jill Bodak will gather to discuss this particular story, and the implications it has for the larger discussions happening across our country with regards to caregiving, end-of-life choices and how to embrace death as a triumph when we can, instead of a failure.

If you've read the book, come chat about it and why it spoke to you. If you haven't read the book, come get one at Loud Women Collective and join in this heartfelt and deeply needed conversation.

The evening will include warm company, good conversation, a chance to ask questions and also buy the book! All proceeds from this project are donated to Dying with Dignity Canada in memory of Bill.
