Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is a global event that was established to get us talking, thinking and learning about digital accessibility for users with different disabilities. To celebrate GAAD, Student Accessibility Services is encouraging faculty, staff and students to take an hour out of their day to consider accessibility best practices. SAS will be posting activities and best practices for you to explore over the next 4 weeks.

Week 1: Best Practice: Use your Accessibility Checker!

Most platforms, like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, are using an accessibility checker of some kind for creating documents. It is the first step to ensuring reading order, alternative text, font size, colour contrast, headings and many more things that we may not think about until we’re prompted to.

In MyCourseLink, you can access the Accessibility Checker by  choosing the ‘eye’ icon at the bottom right of the editing screen in the HTML editor. It will flag errors and offer solutions. Colour contrast, font size, alt text, etc., will be flagged for your attention, with solutions built in. Go to https://www.d2l.com/accessibility/ for more information.

Challenge: Activate the Accessibility Checker! Turn on your accessibility checker under the review tab on the navigations ribbon when you begin creating a Word document or PowerPoint presentation. It will flag potential errors while you work.

Join SAS staff and create an accessible document or presentation. You can view the previously recorded sessions on the Teaching Commons Workshop & Webinar Recordings or you can sign up to join the live Let’s Get Accessible Sessions on June 2nd and June 3rd, 2020.

If you would like more information about Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) or to see what other institutions are doing worldwide to celebrate, please visit their website at https://globalaccessibilityawarenessday.org/

Please consider filling out this short survey if you have completed any of the online activities.

Convocation is a time to celebrate your accomplishments as a Lakehead University graduate, and to share this celebration with your family and friends.

Unfortunately, with the ongoing uncertainties related to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will not be possible to hold our Spring Convocation ceremonies originally planned to take place in May/June 2020. It is our hope that we will be able to reschedule Convocation ceremonies for sometime this Fall. Further details will be shared once available.

Lakehead University students eligible to graduate will still have their degrees conferred in spring 2020 following approval at the Lakehead University May 2020 Senate meeting.

Please see www.lakeheadu.ca/studentcentral/graduating/ceremony-details-thunder-bay for additional ceremony information.
