May 21st, 2020 was Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)!

As we move forward into June, we would like to keep the spirit of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) alive and to continue to bring accessibility awareness to the forefront of the ongoing discussion. To celebrate the diversity of our community, Student Accessibility Service will continue to provide Best Practices and Challenges for a couple more weeks.

Week 3:

Best Practices: Navigation

When we think about accessibility we sometimes forget that the very root of that is access. When thinking about our computers do we realize how much access and navigation are built in to make our user experience as easy as possible? How reliant are you on your computer mouse, or your phone’s touch screen, or even a simple voice command of ‘Alexa, add milk to the grocery list,’. Sometimes we forget that a lot of the access we take for granted is there because developers of products and marketing have realized that there were barriers for others.

Keyboard Only Challenge: try using only your computer keyboard to navigate for an hour. Can you unplug your mouse, disable the touch pad and simply use keyboard commands to go through your daily online routines? Go through your emails, check your favorite news sites, and find out if you can navigate just by using the keyboard. If you are unfamiliar with keyboard commands you can visit https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help/stable/keyboard-nav.html.en

If you would like more information about Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) or to see what other institutions are doing worldwide to celebrate, please visit their website at https://globalaccessibilityawarenessday.org/

Thank you for your participation in week three. Please take a moment to answer a few short survey questions. We appreciate your feedback.

May 21st, 2020 was Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)!

It is already the second week of June and we would like to keep the spirit Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) alive and to continue to bring accessibility awareness to the forefront of the ongoing discussion. This is our final week of Accessibility Best Practices and Challenges! We hope you’ve enjoyed them.

Week 4:

Best Practices: Closed Captioning and Video Transcripts

Do you use captioning when you’re watching videos? Captioning is a wildly important part of accessibility and not just for those who are hard of hearing or deaf but to engage learning styles, to help people learn languages, or maybe you’re just trying to watch something and the environment is too loud or meant to be quiet for others.

Most programs, like Zoom, have a captioning option built in. For help with Zoom visit Zoom Support. If you are using Final Cut Pro to edit your videos, Apple Support can walk you through Captioning. You can also use services like Otter.ai to transcribe the audio of a lecture or video.

Transcription offers another level of accessibility. For some people having the words in front of them for studying or for retention is paramount to their learning. Some meeting transcription software and apps will even let you upload the audio or video into their program and it will transcribe those files by the minute so that you could take the transcription, line it up with your videos timestamps and create captions.

Caption Viewing Challenge: Movie Night!

Need a perfect Friday night activity? Have a favorite movie you haven’t watched in a while? It’s time to make some popcorn, turn on the closed captions and watch that movie to see how you feel about the closed captioning option. Does the movie have described video as well as closed captioning? Described video is an option for people with vision loss and is another added feature that many movies and TV shows offer. If you’ve never tried out the closed captioning or the described video, please take this time to try it out!

Student Accessibility Services would like to thank you for your participation in our Global Accessibility Awareness Day events. Please take a moment to answer this final set of survey questions. We really appreciate your feedback.
