Undergraduate Student Research Summer Internship (Social Sciences and Humanities) Program Guidelines
The Undergraduate Student Research Summer Internship supports undergraduate research opportunities in the social sciences and humanities through full-time employment during the spring/summer term (14-16 weeks between May 3, 2026 to August 22, 2026). Funding for this program is administered by the Office of Research Services with internal funding allocated by the Vice-President Research and Innovation.
To be ELIGIBLE TO APPLY for an internship, you must:
- be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada;
- be registered in a bachelor's degree program at an eligible university at the time you apply;
- have obtained a cumulative average of at least 75% in your previous university academic year (college transfer students and Year One (1) students must have at least 75% average at the end of the current year); and,
- have held less than three internships during your undergraduate career.
To HOLD an internship, you must:
- be registered in a bachelor’s degree program;
- have completed all the course requirements of at least one year of university study (or two academic terms) of your bachelor's degree;
- have been registered in a bachelor’s degree program in the term immediately before holding the award;
- work under the supervision of a Lakehead University faculty member authorized to supervise students;
- have a proposed research project that clearly lies within social sciences and humanities;
- be engaged on a full-time basis in research and development activities in the social sciences and humanities during tenure of the award (Duration: 14-16 weeks with no payment for vacation leave during the tenure of the award);
- not have started a graduate studies program; and,
- NOTE Spring/Summer Courses - may take a maximum of two courses during the tenure of the internship with your research supervisor’s approval.
To SUPERVISE a student holding an internship, researchers must:
- Be authorized to supervise students with a research project that lies within social sciences and humanities; and
- Have a research funds available to cover the remaining wages (see payment of internships)
Payment of Internships:
Up to eight (8) subsidies valued at $6,000 each are available to help cover the cost of hiring an undergraduate research assistant to work full-time (35 hours/week) for 14-16 weeks during the spring/summer term (May 3, 2026 to August 22, 2026). Faculty researchers will be expected to cover the remaining amount from one of their research accounts.

Application Process:
Applications must be submitted by the student through the ROMEO research portal. To access the application, log in to MyPortal at https://erpwp.lakeheadu.ca/, click on “View All Cards” at the top right of the homepage and scroll down to “Web Utilities” and click on “Romeo Research Portal”. Once logged into the portal, click “Apply New” in the top right and then select the “Undergraduate Student Research Summer Internship” application form under Awards.
Applications must be submitted by 11:59PM ET on Monday, April 13, 2026 and include the following:
- Application Form
- Research Supervisor Form (uploaded as attachment)
- Unofficial transcript that includes fall grades (uploaded as attachment)
- Research Interests and Goals (uploaded as attachment
- Reference Form (to be completed by up to two professors)
*Please send the link to the Reference Form to a professor that will not be your internship supervisor who can speak to your interest in research and your potential. An optional second reference can be completed by your internship supervisor. Ensure that the deadline is in the email so that your references can complete and submit the Reference Form before the deadline date.
Evaluation Criteria:
Applications will be assessed according to academic excellence, research potential, and expected quality of the training and mentorship to be received.
