Lakehead University is training the next generation of highly skilled professionals for Ontario.  Rubicon Minerals Corporation and New Gold Inc. are two mining companies with advanced stage gold projects in Northern Ontario who appreciate that their future employees may very well be Lakehead University graduates.

Barbara Morton, Director of Human Resources for Rubicon Minerals, recently approached Lakehead and initiated two Rubicon Minerals scholarships - one for a third-year geology student and another for a third-year chemical engineering student with a mining focus. “One of Rubicon’s goals,” Barbara says, “is to be represented in the community in which it operates, which includes providing financial support to students who attend mining-related programs at local colleges and universities.”

In 2012, Rainy River Resources (now known as New Gold Inc.) established the “New Gold Rainy River Project Geology Scholarship.” Kyle Stanfield, Director of Environment and Sustainability for the Rainy River Project recently stated, “New Gold recognizes that our growth and success depends on the long-term economic, social and environmental sustainability of each of the communities in which we live and work.”

Rubicon’s Phoenix Gold Project in Red Lake, Ontario, is slated to begin production in mid-2015 and New Gold’s Rainy River Project is estimated to begin gold production in 2016.

The faculty and students at Lakehead University extend our appreciation to Rubicon Minerals and New Gold for supporting our future geologists and engineers.
