"Coming from a very small high school, I chose Lakehead University in part because of its size. Even after the first week of classes, walking from building to building I was able to recognize faces of people who I had classes with and I really loved how that gave the campus a small community feel right away.

As an out of province student who knew no one in Thunder Bay when I arrived, I found that the student clubs on campus were an excellent way to meet many amazing people. I believe that getting involved with a club on campus was one of the most important decisions I made at Lakehead. I took a turn being on the executive team for the Lakehead University Christian Fellowship (LUCF) student club, which provided me excellent leadership and planning experience that I can now take into my future career. LUSU does an amazing job at supporting student run clubs and I believe that every student should make an effort to be a part of one or even start their own!

Smaller classes provide a chance for important discussion and a more “hands on” approach to learning. One of my professors included student suggestions into the course to tailor the course specifically to us. Professors such as this one, who demonstrate that their courses and students are important to them, are what increased the value of my academic experience at Lakehead."

"I chose to come to Lakehead University because of its Thunder Bay campus. Lakehead is a quiet and safe place to learn and it also provides small class sizes which appealed greatly to me. I think Lakehead University inThunder Bay is the best place to complete a post secondary degree because there arefewer distractions and you can really focus on your studies. Also, I found that the people in Thunder Bay and the students, staff and faculty at Lakehead areall very kind, friendly and helpful which is a great feeling once you arrive!

My favourite place to hang out with my friends on campus would have to be at theOutpost. My favourite place to hit the books would have tobe in the Library. Outside of class I liketo dance, read, cook, go for walksand enjoythe outdoors."

"I chose Lakehead University because I have lived in Thunder Bay all of my life so I felt that it would be an easy adjustment to make, compared to going away for school. Lakehead is a smaller university which is better for me because I like the idea of smaller class sizes and more one-on-one time with professors. Lakehead also offered me a program that I was greatly interested in and at an affordable cost. The university community here is very friendly and it's easy to meet people because the atmosphere is very relaxed. The educational experience that you receive is second to none since the interaction with profs is more frequent than it would be at larger institutions.
When I am not in class, I am a TA (teacher's assistant) for the Physics department and I play for the women's Varsity Volleyball team. I love staying active and trying new things."

"I just graduated from Okanogan College with a three year Civil Engineering diploma and have entered the transition program into the Civil Engineering program at Lakehead University. Lakehead offered me the shortest and most convenient way to get my degree.

My advice to future transfer students is to take chemistry and calculus in college. It will better prepare you for the transition program over the summer before entering directly into 3rd year of the degree program. Also, be prepared to do a lot of work so get well rested before you get here. But in the end, it will all be worth it!"

"I chose to come to Lakehead University because the Thunder Bay campus is in my hometown, so I could stay close to my family and friends, and I had heard many great things about the university from others. Lakehead University is the right university for me because of the small class sizes and personal attention that I receive as a student. I am proud to say that I am a Lakehead U business student! Prospective students should know that all of the profs are amazing and they will go out of their way to help you out, even outside of class time. Meeting people at Lakehead comes easy - everyone here is so nice! Also, you will get to know everyone in your program very well and will make lasting friendships."

Women's Studies was an exciting new world which allowed me to consider my own experiences, identity and emotions as important sites of knowledge and inquiry. This feeling was fostered in part by the personalized attention I received from the dedicated, fun and diversely knowledgeable faculty at Lakehead, who encourage students to initiate discussions and projects that matter to them. Women's Studies was the first educational experience of my life where I felt that, rather than simply being a student, I could bring my whole self to the table. I was immediately captivated by the idea of the personal being political: things I had experienced my whole life, but didn't know how to talk about––like sexism––were suddenly understandable in a broader historical, cultural and political context. Women's Studies gave me a language to talk about the ways in which gender, race, class, sexuality, ability and other aspects of identity, shape, and are shaped by each other in a shifting system of ideas. I learned to be a keen critical thinker, something that not only prepared me well for graduate school and my current PhD project but which has also made me a more engaged and empathic citizen.

I am a PhD candidate at McMaster University's Department of English and Cultural Studies. My dissertation examines the ways in which post-WWII Anglo-Atlantic (British, Canadian, American) women's literature works to critique psychiatry as an apparatus of biopolitics. It queries how we might consider madness as a way of reading texts, as a space for re-envisioning identity politics, and as a venue through with to build new kinds of community across difference.

"I came to Lakehead University because I needed a change from city life and Lakehead offered exactly what I needed. I recommend that people and students visit the City of Thunder Bay and Lakehead University. The opportunities that Lakehead has offered me and many other people allow you to grow as a person and as a student.

I find that when I need to study, there are a lot of places you can go around campus and find peace and quiet. When my friends and I hang out we either go to the Outpost or to the Study coffee house and relax.

Outside of class I like to relax, walk and spend time outdoors. I also enjoy hunting and fishing, and the City of Thunder Bay provides me with many opportunities to do both!"

I knew Lakehead was for me when I took a tour of the art building and met the faculty. The Visual Arts department at Lakehead is very small when compared to other schools, however I feel that this has encouraged innovation and has improved my do-it-yourself problem-solving skills.

There have been numerous times when a professor has made a significant impact on me as a student. When I was working on my major studio piece, my sculpture teacher took time out of his weekends to help me with the various woodworking and welding elements of the project. It was the dedication and commitment to his job that I really admired.

A pivotal moment in my experience at Lakehead was when I realized that Art History doesn’t suck. Kristy Holmes helped me to see this by creating an interesting and open environment in which to study art history. Through hers and others classes I came to really enjoy reading about psychoanalysis, feminism, and colonialism. These theories have become a large influence in my art and I feel I have become a stronger artist as a result.

I came to Canada because Canada is the home of some of the world’s top research facilities and academic institutions. Studying in Canada is a rewarding investment for your future with exciting cross-cultural experiences, and a globally recognized degree. Imagine learning in supportive academic environments where professors are approachable and classrooms reflect the cultural diversity of our land. Imagine entering the workforce with qualifications that are recognized and respected all over the world.

My experience at Lakehead University has helped me to learn about new cultures and meet people from all over the world.

Lakehead's reputation, location and the faculty are the reasons why I chose it over other universities in Canada to get my degree.

Living abroad itself is an exciting experience for most expats and international students. But this is not to say that living abroad is easy. Adjusting to a foreign country and culture can be difficult. Living away from your family, friends and all things familiar can be a good thing, but it can also be confusing and difficult at first.

"I had heard about the amazing Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism program at Lakehead, and was extremely interested in pursuing it. I love the interaction you have with the fellow students and the professors. The small classes and informal settings allow for incredible discussion, I have learned so much more than I ever would with a strict lecture format.

I am an active participant in the Outdoor Recreation Student's Society, as well as the Northshore Telemark Ski School. As well, I work part time at several different jobs, and am an active member of my church. In my spare time, I love to climb and explore Thunder Bay, both the city as well as the surrounding wilderness.

I personally like to study at either the campus coffeehouse, The Study, or at Calico's coffeehouse in the city. My favourite place to hang out would have to be either the Madhouse or at a friend's place. Get to know the beauty of Thunder Bay, the people of the area are amazing and are so happy to share their beautiful city with you!"
