"I chose to come to Lakehead not only because it is in my hometown of Thunder Bay but also because I had heard that the Chemistry program had an excellent reputation. Lakehead University has a beautiful campus andexcellent programs to choose from in a wide variety of disciplines. Lakehead also offers students a great deal of professor/student interaction which makes getting a post secondary education more enjoyable. The Chemistry program itself is also amazing. As a student, you are exposed to hands-on learning environments through the use of lab work. This is a great experience and something that I feel is unique to Lakehead University's Chemistry program."

I decided to come to Lakehead University because of the excellent entrance scholarships and the ability to have access to the research facilities, even as an undergraduate student. I have had several professors in the chemistry department who have willingly stayed for up to an hour after the lecture to answer questions from students. I believe that this type of one-on-one time with a professor is almost uncharacteristic at other Universities, but a commonality at Lakehead. At Lakehead University, the amount of people in each program is small enough that the faculty get to know each student on a personal basis, but not too small that there are not fellow students that one can ask for assistance. The community at Lakehead University is very familial-like, and there is a great amount of pride for the university from the students attending it. I was fortunate enough to receive an NSERC summer research grant and to carry out research at the university this summer, an opportunity I do not think would be available to undergraduates at other larger Universities. This summer research will focus on analyzing aqueous carbonate saccharide solutions using the NMR spectrometer for applications in regards to antibiotic resistant bacteria, as well as other industrial applications such as cement mixes. The access to research as an undergraduate student is important to me, as it is invaluable experience that is needed to pursue graduate work, whether at Lakehead or elsewhere.

The University provides easy accessibility and many ways to be involved in the life on campus, including volunteer activities, interest groups, and recreational sports. I am very fortunate to volunteer in the food bank on campus, helping people who are in need of food and other basic necessities. I also play recreational co-ed soccer in the remarkable hangar facility available to the students at the field house. These events are important to break up the time studying, and to meet new people, which is one of the most important aspects of University life. The student union present at Lakehead University does as great job of ensuring that the rights and concerns of the students are heard and taken into account when the University makes decisions. Lakehead University prepares its students for the future by training students in fields that are growing and have jobs available after graduation. Lakehead also plays a big role in preparing people for future careers, as the financial aid department does an excellent job in ensuring students coming out of Lakehead are incurring as little debt as possible, if any.  I have really enjoyed my time at Lakehead University thus far, and I look forward to future opportunities that Lakehead has to offer.  I would recommend Lakehead University for any student looking for quality education that fosters one-on-one learning relationships with professors, endless volunteer and extracurricular opportunities, and tight-knit classes.

I could not be more pleased with my experience at Lakehead University. I chose Lakehead University because of the well-recognized, accelerated Social Work program and its positive reviews.  Lakehead has a beautiful campus, amazing faculty, and truly opens many doors for its students.  As part of the program, I was able to do a six-month practicum at a youth correctional facility in Thunder Bay called the Justice Ronald Lester Youth Centre. I made numerous contacts through this placement and was able to work on a great multidisciplinary team.

Between the Lakehead Social Work faculty, my great classmates, and an amazing practicum, Lakehead University has surpassed my expectations as a student and has given me a wealth of knowledge to bring back to Prince Edward Island.

"I chose to come to Lakehead University because it is my hometown university. I think that the Thunder Bay campus is located in the most beautiful part of Canada with all the amenities of a big city but with the heart and spirit of a small city! Lakehead University has a close community of faculty, staff and students with many different interests but everyone is always friendly and willing to help. Within my own department there are opportunities to explore many different types of biological study from cancer diagnostic techniques to watershed studies orfrom blueberriesto peat bogs."

I chose to go to Lakehead after completing my first year at Laurentian University. I am from Marathon, Ontario, and I was just too far from home. So I transferred to Lakehead to take Honours Chemistry. Classes at Lakehead are small and intimate. It allows optimal time with professors and everyone really gets to know each other. There are clubs for just about anything and I'm in the chemistry club. Joining a club is one of the best things about Lakehead. There is nothing better than blowing off steam after exams by shooting each other in laser tag.

The best part of my undergraduate career was definitely my honours thesis. I learned so much about myself as a researcher and had so much fun doing it. My supervisor was super supportive and even provided comic relief. I couldn't have done it without all the guidance I was provided with."

I love Lakehead because of its community feel and the smaller class sizes. This offers me the ability to make stronger connections with my professors and perform well in class.

I value aspects of Lakehead's student life because at Lakehead there is always something to do, always something to get involved in, always an opportunity for anyone to take part in. Lakehead holds various events throughout the year, such as different retreats, organized events, such as laser tag, or dances, which make Lakehead student life always exciting and interesting.

When I started university, I did not know anyone at Lakehead, so I quickly tried to involve myself in as many different orientation activities as I could. I strongly recommend any prospective student to take part in orientation, because that is where I met my best friends. Through the activities the orientation leaders plan, the free time students are given, just hanging out in the cafeteria, and attending residence events, my first year flew by, and I made friends with people that I know I will best friends with for the rest of my life.

I chose to attend Lakehead University for many reasons; the first being that the facility is fairly new, which I really appreciate as many other Universities can seem dark and grungy due to the old architecture. I also, love Lakehead because of its small community like feel, and because of the smaller class sizes I was able to make better connections with my professors, and friends. This allowed me to feel more at home sooner than I would have thought I would. And lastly I chose Lakehead University because of its close proximity to my hometown, and family.

I appreciate that the classes at Lakehead University although are small, offer the ability to make stronger connections with ones professors. As a result, one can achieve higher grades because one is able to get to know the professors and learn what each professor expects, thus, making it easier to perform well, and receive the grads desired. I would also recommend getting involved in any possible activities through the school, by doing this it allowed me to build up my confidence on campus, and I became recognized by some of my professors and other students. I learned a lot this past year both in and outside the classroom and would not change anything about my experience. Lastly, I encourage everyone to try and find an on campus job, as this allows one to both attend school and work at the same place. I work at the Lakehead University library and love it, any work-study job that suits ones talents and abilities I strongly suggest one try.

My favourite class this past year was Literature in English after 1750 with Dr. Linda Rodenburg, this was a very interesting class to me and I appreciated Dr.Rodenburg's teaching style. She is a very pleasant professor and I thoroughly enjoyed the material and the overall class.

I chose Lakehead for a number of reasons; first of all, staying in my hometown would save me some money that I cold direct into my athletic endeavors. Lakehead also has one of the best Nordic ski teams in the country and as Nordic skiing was my primary sport at the time Lakehead was the obvious. I toured other universities and something that I liked about Lakehead was the size. Smaller classroom sizes as well as a smaller University were something I liked. Also the entrance scholarships were better at Lakehead, coming out of high school with over 95% average, Lakehead gave me full tuition where as other university would have not.

I love to travel, ever since my family traveled around South America I have just wanted to go somewhere again. Through sport I have traveled around the country to places like Whitehorse and Quebec City but I have wanted to go overseas. This coming winter I am going to Helsinki, Finland to study Environmental Management for a semester. I am going through the North 2 North exchange program and would have been unable to do this without Lakehead and the awesome staff in the international office.

I believe exercise is a great stress and tension reliever and so by using sport I have been able to remove lots of stress and increase my productivity. Athletics has made me great at time management, as I have to also be able to fin in my daily workouts. I go crazy if I don’t exercise.

I was always told how in the Natural Resource Management faculty had an open door policy where you could just knock on the door of your professor and talk with them. I didn’t realize how nice this was. Having other professors in other faculties that have office hours and are usually short and very infrequent. The NRMT faculty wants you to be happy and to succeed.

During my Lakehead degree, I had the opportunity to do an international exchange. I studied at the Umeå School of Business and Economics in Umeå, Sweden – one of the larger cities in Northern Sweden.

Studying abroad has always been something that I have wanted to do. The idea first surfaced from when I was travelling a number of years ago. I wanted to be able to travel somewhere in the context of 'living' rather than merely 'visiting.' Being able to establish a routine in a completely different culture seemed like a very attractive idea to me.

In so many ways I feel this experience has enhanced my education. Stepping outside of our culture and into the day-to-day life of another community and country gave me a whole new perspective of things. My biggest takeaway from studying abroad was how similar we all are. After a little while you begin to notice that aside from all the noticeable differences, such as language and culture, we are all cut from the same cloth.
