Work While You Study

Working as a student is a great way to build your resume and make money.  We understand that it may be difficult to balance work with your studies.  Through our Work Study Programs we make it easy to earn additional income and gain valuable experience by offering over 150 jobs right on campus to students like you.  Employers are flexible and work around your class scheduled, ensuring you have the perfect balance between work and study.  Look at the two programs below to learn more about this great opportunity.

 Work Study Program (WSP) - September to March

The Work Study Program allows students to gain valuable, on-campus work experience during the academic year.  On-campus jobs provide students an excellent opportunity to participate in the university while focusing on their education and earning a little extra money to help them through the year.

Please note that the application for 2017-18 is available through mySuccess.lakeheadu.ca and is open from August 16 until October 20. Login using your myInfo login information, then select “Jobs” then “On Campus Work Study” then “Eligibility Application” to apply.

How much can I earn?

  • The Work Study Program is a wage subsidy for your employer of up to $2,000 for the fall/winter session. This is based on a minimum of 242 hours worked from September – March. Hourly wages vary depending on the employer and type of work being done.
  • OSAP students: you can earn up to $100/week (from all income sources) without your OSAP entitlement being affected.

Eligibility

Do you meet the following criteria?

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be an undergraduate student
  • Must NOT be on academic probation
  • Must be registered in a 60% course load (40% with a permanent disability)
  • Must demonstrate financial need

If you said yes to all of those questions then the Work Study Program (WSP) is for you.  You'll want to submit the application through mySuccess.lakeheadu.ca anytime from August 16 until October 20. Login using your myInfo login information, then select “Jobs” then “On Campus Work Study” then “Eligibility Application” to apply.  Get your application in sooner to ensure you get consideration for the position you want.

 

Can I be approved for a position and then apply for WSP?

No, you must receive approval before you apply for a LU WSP position (never after). 

How do I know if I have been approved?

Approved students will be sent a message to their Lakehead University email account with their Confirmation of Approval & Hiring Form attached.  This form needs to be submitted to your employer upon successful hiring.

I'm a potential employer, where do I find information?

You can learn more about the work-study program or submit your jobs by logging into the MySuccess portal available through the Student Success Centre https://mysuccess.lakeheadu.ca/employers/overview.htm.  If you need to create an account please contact ssc@lakeheadu.ca

Employers can begin to apply for jobs on August 1 - August 15.

Summer Work Program (SWP) - April to August
 

The Summer Work Program allows students to gain valuable, on-campus work experience from April 16 – September 2, 2017. These on-campus jobs provide students an excellent opportunity to potentially work full-time while participating in university life.

Hourly wages vary depending on the employer and type of work being done. Most SWP students are employed full-time over the summer months.
