Anthropology
Anthropology is the broad, multi-disciplinary study and documentation of humans, past and present. As an Anthropology student you will have the opportunity to study everything from stone artifacts and skeletal remains, to a community's economic structure and unique dialect. Our Department of Anthropology has four distinct sub-disciplines with many different topics to explore in each:
- Archaeology
- Bioanthropology
- Linguistics
- Socio-Cultural Anthropology
Our courses blend in-class lecture with seminars, labs and field work to provide you with a well-rounded background in both the theoretical and practical applications of your area of interest. You will have access to world-class laboratories and anthropological collections which have contributed to groundbreaking findings and been utilized by some of the foremost leaders in the field.
Our faculty members are active and innovative researchers on an international scale, which is reflected in our renowned undergraduate research opportunities. Our faculty members regularly work with undergraduate students on special topics courses and projects, many of whom have presented their findings at various national archaeological conferences and established themselves very early in their careers.
Additionally, we run a field school over the summer to provide hands-on training in archaeological excavation, laboratory analysis, material culture identification and mapping. These field schools typically take place in Northwestern Ontario, however we have partnerships with organizations in Croatia, Israel and Italy should you wish to choose a unique destination to supplement your studies.
Lakehead Advantage
We are one of the only universities in Canada to offer a Bachelor of Science (Anthropology) and an Honours Bachelor of Science (Anthropology) in addition to the Arts stream. The Science stream is focused on more field and lab-based work with an emphasis on core science courses including Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as Math and Geography. This unique and thorough curriculum will allow you to pursue a career in Anthropology or the sciences depending on your interests.
Our Department of Anthropology is widely recognized as a leader in undergraduate research and for producing world-class Anthropologists. Our faculty members are leaders in their respective field of study and regularly work with undergraduate students on special topics courses and projects. Our students have published papers and presented their findings at national archaeological conventions across Canada, with most of them winning a place on the podium for their innovation.
We have a range of laboratories housing world-class equipment, integral to research across the region. You will have access to these resources including:
- Environmental Archaeology & Paleoecology Laboratory
- LU GIS Laboratory
- LU Instrumentation Laboratory
- LU Map Library
- LU Paleo-DNA Laboratory
- Physical Anthropology Laboratory
- Zooarchaeology Laboratory
Our location in Northwestern Ontario makes Lakehead University the ideal institution to study Anthropology. We are surrounded by many unique populations, ancient beaches and excavation sites that have yielded revolutionary research opportunities and findings.
Applying to Lakehead University is easy and we are here to help you along the way.

If you're interested in Archaeology, our field schools are a great way to earn credit toward your Anthropology degree and further your practical knowledge in the discipline. You will have the opportunity to travel to locations in Northwestern Ontario or Europe to learn applied archaeological skills over a six-week period, such as:
- Laboratory analysis
- Material culture identification
- Archaeological excavation techniques
- Mapping
- Field data recording
We encourage you to become a member of the Thunder Bay Chapter of the Ontario Archaeological Society. The organization regularly hosts social events, workshops, speakers’ series and many other initiatives to share knowledge among the university community and the discipline as a whole.
Our Department of Anthropology has scholarships and bursaries specifically for undergraduate Anthropology students. For more a complete listing of scholarships, bursaries and application information contact the Financial Aid Office.
