Undergraduate Admission Requirements by Country

Lakehead University welcomes applicants from all across the world. 

To be considered for admission to Lakehead University, please refer to the country in which you completed your secondary school studies or the type of education you received internationally for the admission requirements:

British-Patterned Education

Applicants will be considered for admission provided they:

  • Possess the (International) General Certificate of Secondary Education with:
    • Passes in at least five subjects:
      • Two of which must be at the Advanced Level (G.C.E.)
        • Two subjects at the Advanced Supplementary (A.S.) Level may be substituted for one subject at the Advanced Level. 
        • For example, 4 Advanced Supplementary (A.S.) Level courses equal two A Level Courses. 
      • The remaining three passes may be at the Ordinary Level (G.C.S.E.)
    • Acceptable standing must be achieved in all subjects
  1. Applicants may apply for admission in the year they will be sitting for their final A-Level examinations provided they can present excellent grades in their O-Level examinations and strong predicted A-Level results.

  2. Applied Advanced Levels subjects are not ideal preparation for our programs: General Paper, General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills, Key Skills, and AS Global Perspectives and Research are not acceptable. 

  3. With the exception of the Faculty of Engineering, for all other programs that require "Mathematics" as a prerequisite, AS-Level Mathematics is required.

  4. Applicants presenting A-Level examinations with a minimum grade of "C" may be considered for advanced standing.

  5. In addition to the above, applicants interested in the four year Bachelor of Engineering degree program must complete the following prerequisite courses:
    • A-Level Mathematics
    • A-Level Physics 
    • A-Level Chemistry is preferred; however, AS-level Chemistry will be accepted 
    • O-Level English 
  6. To satisfy the English prerequisite requirement, applicants must possess one of the following English courses:
    • A-Level Literature in English 
    • AS Level Literature in English
    • O-Level Literature in English 
    • A-Level English Language
    • AS Level English Language 
    • AS Level Language and Literature 
    • A-Level English as a Second Language (ESL)
    • AS-Level ESL 
  7. In addition to the above, the following courses satisfy the English prerequisite requirement for Business, Health & Behavioural Sciences (excluding Nursing), Natural Resources Management, and Science and Environmental Studies programs:
    • O-Level English Language
    • O-Level First Language English
    • O-Level ESL
  8. International Baccalaureate (IB) Program
    International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme applicants who achieve their diploma with a total score of at least 24 may be eligible for admission. Three Higher Level subjects must be completed. Prerequisite courses can be presented at either Standard Level or Higher Level. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Some of our competitive programs may require a total score greater than 24.

    To satisfy the Mathematics prerequisite requirement, applicants must complete one of the following courses:
    • Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches (SL or HL)
    • Mathematics: Applications & Interpretations (HL)

      Note: Mathematics: Applications & Interpretations (SL) satisfies the Mathematics prerequisite requirement for programs (e.g. Business, Economics, Kinesiology, etc.) that do not require Ontario's Grade 12 University-level Advanced Functions.

     

    Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE)
    Applicants will be considered for admission provided they submit an accepted secondary certificate. Acceptable secondary certificates include:
    1. A Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Diploma and Secondary Education Certificate with:
      • Passes in at least five (5) subjects:
        • Two (2) of which must be at the CAPE Unit 2 level
          • Two (2) subjects at the CAPE Unit 1 level may be substituted for one subject at the CAPE Unit 2 level.
        • The remaining three (3) passes may be at the CXC level.
      • Applicants may apply for admission in the year they will be sitting for their final Unit 2 examinations provided they can present excellent grades in their CXC examinations and strong predicted Unit 2 results.
      • With the exception of the Faculty of Engineering, for all other programs that require "Mathematics" as a prerequisite, CAPE Unit 1 Mathematics is required.
      • Applicants interested in the four-year Bachelor of Engineering degree program must complete the following prerequisite courses:
        • CAPE Unit 2 Mathematics, CAPE Unit 2 Physics, CAPE Unit 2 Chemistry is preferred; however, Unit 1 Chemistry will be accepted; and CXC level English. 
    2. A Secondary School Certificate awarded by the Jamaica Ministry of Education.
    3. A Bermuda Secondary School Certificate.
    4. A General Certificate of Education (please review the qualifications required for British-Patterned Education.
    French-Patterned Education
    To be considered for admission from the French-Patterned Education system, applicants must: 
    1. Have completed the Baccalaureat/ Baccalaureat General/ Diplome de Bachelier do l’Enseignment du Second Degree/ Option Internationale du Baccalaureat 
    2. Have achieved the overall ranking of "good" in all subjects required for admission to a specific program.
    French Patterned Education regions include:
    Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, France, French Guiana, Gabon, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, Togo, and Tunisia.
    China
    Applicants educated in China will be considered for admission provided they:
    1. Present a Graduation Certificate awarded by a senior (upper) middle school or by the Unified National University Entrance Examinations
    Students that have studied at the secondary school level in a Canadian curriculum school (such as Maple Leaf Schools) must meet the high school/secondary school admission requirements for the Canadian province in which the curriculum covers.
    Ghana and Nigeria
    Applicants will be considered for admission provided they submit either:
    1. The Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (SSCE) or; 
    2. The Senior School Certificate with WAEC Exam Results.
    The certificate and results submitted must be issued directly from WAEC, or  applicants may submit the PIN from a Scratch Card so that our Admissions Office can verify the WAEC results are reported by the applicants Senior Secondary School.  All other copies will not be accepted.
     
    Further Mathematics is required for Engineering and Science programs. 
    India
    Applicants will be considered for admission provided they present one of the following certificates:
    1. A State Higher Secondary Certificate awarded by a State Board of Higher Secondary Education or; 
    2. India and Delhi Senior School Certificate awarded by the Central Board of Secondary Education or; 
    3. Indian School Certificate awarded by the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations

    For applicants who are currently in-progress, please submit:

    • X level exam scores,
    • XI level final mark sheet, and
    • Mid-year or predicated XII results.
    United States of America
    Applicants will be considered for admission provided they:
    • Achieve a minimum admission average of 70% based on their senior level (i.e. Grade 12) or equivalent courses;
    • Complete a minimum of four academic courses at the senior level or equivalent;
    • Satisfy the program specific prerequisites by completing academic courses at the senior level or equivalent; and
    • Obtain their high school diploma from an accredited institution. 
    • Applicants are not required to complete an ACT or SAT.
