Aug 29	Lakehead Professor’s New Book Sheds a Northern Light on Polar Tourism (Thunder Bay) Dr. Harvey Lemelin’s latest book, From Talk to Action: How Tourism is Changing the Polar Regions, discusses how polar tourism has become a global industry. “The book is based on outcomes from the third International Polar Tourism Research Network Conference held in the small Inuit community of Nain, Nunatsiavut in 2012. We are particularly proud of these proceedings since they featured the voice of Nunatsiavut residents, consultants, graduate students, and academics,” said Dr. Lemelin, the Lakehead University Research Chair in Parks and Protected Areas.
Aug 28	Homestay Program a Win-Win for International Students and Hosts (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University International (LUI) is looking for people in Thunder Bay who are interested in participating in the University’s Homestay Program. The program is seeking those who would enjoy hosting international students coming to Canada to learn English and study. “This is a wonderful opportunity to experience a new culture while helping our international students adjust to life in Canada,” said LUI’s Director, Leigh-Ellen Keating.
Aug 8	Canadian Semiconductor Conference will be held in Thunder Bay (Thunder Bay) The 16th Canadian Semiconductor Science and Technology Conference (CSSTC 2013) will attract more than 100 professors, graduate students, researchers and industry representatives to Thunder Bay next week. Hosted by Lakehead University and the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI), CSSTC 2013 brings together the brightest Canadian minds from universities, research institutions and industries to discuss the latest semiconductor research.

The Science Without Borders program provides scholarships funded by the Brazilian federal government.
Jul 30	Lakehead’s Alumni Signature Tournament Helps Students Live Their Dreams (Thunder Bay) The RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament is a success each year thanks to the support of title sponsor RBC and presenting sponsor Wasaya Airways. The annual RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament raises funds in order for students to live their dreams by pursuing their post-secondary education. “Cost should not be a barrier to education,” said Mark Tilbury, Director, Alumni and Community Relations at Lakehead University. “Post-secondary education plays an important role in a person’s future. This support shows that RBC and Wasaya Airways are extremely community-minded and we thank them for that.”
Jun 26	Lakehead University’s Bridge Team Successful at National Competition (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s Civil Engineering students placed in the top 10 at the 2013 National Student Steel Bridge Competition at Seattle’s University of Washington. The Lakehead team was one of 49 universities and colleges at the invitation-only competition. Lakehead’s five-member team was invited in March after winning the Mid-West Regional Competition at Iowa State University. “The steel bridge competition provides students with real engineering experience: planning and design, team work, essential problem solving skills and the opportunity to compete against other schools from Canada, the US and Mexico,” said Raquel Almeida, one of the students on the team.
Jun 25	EDGE Helps New Lakehead Students Succeed (Thunder Bay) New students and their families are invited to “Explore, Discover, Get Involved and Ease Their Minds” at EDGE 2013. Participants will visit Lakehead’s residence, meet upper-year students, faculty and staff, and take part in programming at this two-day orientation. EDGE will occur Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5 on the Thunder Bay campus. “EDGE is the perfect opportunity for students and family members to explore our beautiful campus, discover what Lakehead has to offer, and participate in activities designed to ease the transition to university,” said Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson.

Jun 13	Lakehead’s ActiveU offers fun for youth (Thunder Bay) Registration has opened for ActiveU, a unique Lakehead University camp for youth from Grade 4 to 6 that explores recreational, educational and fun-based programming in a diverse setting. “ActiveU helps bring out the best in children and youth through interactive athletic and educational activities, however it isn’t just about sports and learning,” said Lakehead University President & Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson. “ActiveU is also about giving kids the chance to see how a university education can help them realize their own potential for success.”
Jun 11	Lakehead Highlighted in Ontario Universities’ Going Greener Report (Orillia) , (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is doing its part to help Ontario’s university campuses and students shrink their environmental footprints, according to the fourth annual Going Greener report released today by the Council of Ontario Universities (COU). “Ontario’s universities have so many responsibilities to society, whether it’s facilitating the success of future generations, or helping protect the world in which they will succeed,” said Lakehead University President & Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson. “I am very proud of how Lakehead and Ontario’s university community has taken a leading role in environmental initiatives.”
Jun 5	Lakehead University and Local School Boards Receive Grant to Increase Student Success (Thunder Bay) A Lakehead University research team is receiving $197,942 from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to investigate how cultural diversity shapes the integration of strengths-based programs in schools. This is the first Partnership Development Grant that SSHRC has given to a team from Lakehead University. Partners include Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boreales, Lakehead Public School Board and the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board. “Our research demonstrates that educators who use a strengths-based approach increase student success and reduce bullying,” said Dr. Ed Rawana, Clinical Psychologist, Director of the Centre of Excellence for Children and Adolescents with Special Needs, and Director of Lakehead’s Clinical Psychology Program.
Jun 4	Lakehead Graduates First Cohort from Teaching English as a Second Language Program (Thunder Bay) Students enrolled in Lakehead University’s newest program are set to finish their coursework this Thursday and use what they’ve learned across Canada and around the world. The Teaching English as a Second Language certificate program requires 100 hours of in-class work and 20 hours of practicum. The in-class work finishes this week, and students are currently working to set up their practicum.
May 30	Lakehead University’s 2013 Thunder Bay Campus Convocation Ceremonies (Thunder Bay) Lakehead will graduate approximately 2,500 students during the University’s Convocation ceremonies at its Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses over the next two weeks. In Thunder Bay, graduates, friends, family, award recipients, and honourees will celebrate achievements this Friday and Saturday at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium.
May 13	Lakehead University Honours Seventh Chancellor, Dr. Arthur Mauro (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is hosting a reception to honour its 7th Chancellor, Dr. Arthur Mauro, today, from 5:00 – 6:30 pm, in the Office of the President. Lakehead President & Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson, will thank Dr. Mauro on behalf of the University community for the years of service he gave to the institution. Dr. Mauro’s three year term as Chancellor of Lakehead University ended on December 31, 2012. Respected for his numerous career- and community-based accomplishments, Dr. Mauro’s leadership in furthering Lakehead University's initiatives includes his role in establishing Lakehead’s new Faculty of Law. He believes that accomplishment is indicative of the critical role of the University in Northwestern Ontario and Canada.

Apr 5	Lakehead University Names Former Canadian Ambassador as its Eighth Chancellor (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University is proud to announce distinguished former career diplomat, entrepreneur and political strategist, Dr. Derek Hudson Burney, as its eighth Chancellor. "Dr. Burney is an accomplished individual with a national and international reputation and deep roots in Thunder Bay," said Lakehead University President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson. "Lakehead University is honoured that this former ambassador to the United States from 1989 - 1993 will now represent our great university at home and abroad."

Mar 26	Faculty of Law Completes its Inaugural Year's Faculty (Orillia) , (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s Faculty of Law is pleased to welcome Dr. Frances Chapman and Mr. Jason MacLean to its founding faculty. These appointments officially complete the Faculty’s first year hires. “Both of our new faculty bring with them solid legal practice credentials and strong scholarship — exactly what we need," said the Faculty of Law’s Dean, Lee Stuesser. "In a small school that emphasizes teaching, they will be excellent in the classroom. We’re thrilled to have them as part of our founding team."
Mar 25	New Canada Research Chair Appointed at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay) Lakehead University’s Dr. Pauline Sameshima has been awarded a Canada Research Chair in Arts Integrated Studies. She comes to Lakehead from Washington State University where she taught Arts Integrated Research in the Teacher Education Program and the Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education Graduate Program. Dr. Sameshima, an Associate Professor in Lakehead’s Faculty of Education, has also been awarded more than $25,000 by the Canada Foundation for Innovation Leaders Opportunity Fund to develop an Arts Integrated Research Lab. “My work promotes the use of arts in learning, teaching and research. It nurtures individual researcher and student creativity development and provides new perspectives,” Dr. Sameshima said.
