Lakehead University's School of Kinesiology is partnering with Campus Rec and the Lakehead Thunderwolves to offer Parasport activities for the 2022-2023 school year.

Lakehead University was selected as a site for the Adaptive Sports and Recreation in Post-Secondary Institution project. These projects, which are taking place at select University’s across Ontario, are possible due to a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), the Toronto Accessible Sports Council (TASC), along with many partners at the Ontario Parasport Collective (OPC).

About Sitting Volleyball (Taken from https://volleyball.ca/en/sitting-volleyball-teams)

Sitting Volleyball is perhaps the most widely known form of ParaVolley thanks to its inclusion in the Paralympic Games since Arnhem in 1980. Played by over 10,000 athletes, in more than 55 countries worldwide it is a truly global game that anyone can play.

The Sitting Volleyball rules are based on the FIVB rules for able-bodied volleyball, with a few minor modifications. It requires a smaller court (10m x 6m) and a lower net (1.15m for men, 1.05m for women), and the game is considerably faster than standing volleyball. It’s played in a best-of-five set format, and the first to reach 25 points (with at least a 2-point lead) wins the set.

Teams compete in male and female events, with six on the court at a time. At all times, a portion of the athlete’s torso must be in contact with the ground, and service blocks and attacks are allowed.

Who Can Play?

At the non-international level, sitting volleyball can be played by anyone. Through the lens of Unified Sport, one of the great features of sitting volleyball is the fact that it provides the opportunity to easily integrate able-bodied athletes and athletes with a physical impairment on a level playing field. Without the need for specialized equipment such as wheelchairs or sleds, it is very easy for anyone to sit down and play!

THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE GRADUATE SEMINAR 2022
Guest Speaker Series Presented By:

Dr. David Savage
"Data analytics in healthcare: Bringing multiple approaches together to improve planning and decision making"

Friday, November 11, 2022
11:30 am

Abstract:
Data analytics has become very common in healthcare. The application of these techniques has improved clinical care, the delivery of medicine and patient outcomes. This presentation will review a number of healthcare research studies that have used a broad spectrum of techniques to investigate different healthcare problems. The studies use descriptive, predictive and prescriptive techniques to analyze a variety of problems. These techniques have been used to describe patient populations such as pediatric patients receiving CT imaging. They have been used to predict which patient requires admission to hospital or whether a patient needs CT imaging. We have used machine learning to examine our population of family physicians and where they practice. These models have also been used to develop optimal physician shift schedules to meet patient demand. The presentation will also discuss opportunities at ICES North for data analytics to improve our healthcare system.

Dr. David Savage is an Assistant Professor at NOSM University, an Emergency Physician and Research Director at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. He is also the Interim Site Director at ICES North. Dr. Savage received his MD and emergency medicine training from NOSM University. He also holds a PhD from the University of Toronto where he studied quantitative decision making and systems modelling. He has an external adjunct faculty position in the Department of Computer Science at Lakehead University where he co-supervises graduate students working on healthcare related studies.

The Department of Gender and Women’s Studies Feminist Dialogues Speaker Series presents "Reproductive Justice Revisited:
The History Impacts of the Decriminalization of Abortion in Canada." Dr. Jula Hughes (Dean and Professor, Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, Lakehead University) will be presenting November 16, 2022.

Summary: We all know what happened: the decriminalization of abortion in 1969 didn’t accomplish much and it wasn’t until the Supreme Court of Canada declared the Criminal Code regime unconstitutional in the 1988 decision in Morgentaler that things changed for the better. The talk seeks to complicate the story by considering the impacts of these key moments in the legal history of abortion in Canada as they emerge from the historical record. I argue that important insights for the present and future of reproductive justice in Canada can be gleaned from revisiting this history as regards to barriers to access and how they might be overcome.
