Jean E. Pendziwol is celebrating the release of her latest picture book When I Listen to Silence at two events in April. Pendziwol, who taught advanced Creative Writing in the Department of English at Lakehead University, uses a story-poem to explore the imagination when a young child is asked to sit, silent.

Through the window, the child can hear the trees breathe and watches them sway back and forth as they begin to dance. Her imagination takes her on a magical journey, past pirates and fire breathing dragons, to whales and mermaids before coming full circle to sit silent again. Carmen Mok's illustrations flow continuously from spread to spread like film in the same circular structure as the text. Lauded by Quill and Quire and featured by CBC Books as one of the top picture books to watch for this spring, When I Listen to Silence is published by Groundwood Books/House of Anansi Press.

Jean E. Pendziwol will be at Goods and Co. on Saturday, April 2 from 1 - 3 pm for readings, kids crafts and a book signing.

Entershine Bookshop will host Jean E. Pendziwol in conversation with Michael Sobota on Thursday, April 7 at 7 pm at the bookshop on Algoma. Admission is free, but pre-registration is required. Follow this link to register with Entershine.

Over the last two decades, data visualization has become an exciting and rapidly evolving field of practice, with incredible work being produced across disciplines and at all levels of scientific communication.

This workshop will approach data visualization in two sections: 1) we will first discuss what motivates researchers to visualize their data, 2) we will then compare tools for learning how to visualize data, including applications, software, coding languages and instructional pathways. Tools and resources discussed include: Excel/ Google Sheets, Tableau, Python, R, D3.js, Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape.

This workshop is part of the “where to start” data workshop series. This means that the point of the session is not to deliver a step-by-step tutorial. Instead, we aim to help you to identify the best resources to begin a sustainable, practical journey to the form of data literacy that best suits your needs. Each workshop is a stand-alone experience, though they are offered in an intentional sequence.
