Last winter, undergraduate students and instructors from the School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism at Lakehead University began exploring how people use fat bikes in recreational and sporting activities.

As one of the first post-secondary courses to be offered on fat biking, Topics in Outdoor Recreation – Fat Bikes: Big Tires – Big Aspirations provides a unique experiential opportunity for students to acquire fat biking skills while also interviewing managers, shop owners and fat bikers throughout Northwestern Ontario and Northeastern Minnesota.

Dr. Harvey Lemelin, professor in Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism, will host this discussion at the Brodie Library on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2 pm.

Three mini seminar presentations by NRM graduate students as follows. Please join us!

1. Hanna Dorval, MSCF Candidate
Lichens and allied fungi of Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park, Ontario

Ouimet Canyon sustains arctic microclimates and provides refuge for biotic communities unique to this region. However, the lichen community found here remains largely unstudied. This floristic study of lichens within Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park includes many rare and arctic-alpine species, and the first report of Brodoa oroarctica from Ontario.

2. Erin Kielt, MSCF Candidate
Effects of CO2 and temperature elevation on the efficacy of ectomycorrhizae in jack pine under different nutrient conditions

The potential effects of single factors associated with climate change on the regeneration of boreal forests have been extensively studied. However, the interactive effects of multiple factors are generally poorly understood. The overall objective of this study is to investigate how the elevations of CO2 and temperature interact with soil nutrient supply in affecting the formation and growth-enhancing efficiency of ectomycorrhizae in jack pine seedlings.

3. Kristy Vannieuwenhuizen, MSCF Candidate
Effects of soil compaction on the germination and growth of Pinus banksiana and Picea mariana seedlings

Soil compaction has long been an issue for the forest industry. In this study, Kristy analyzes jack pine (P. banksiana) and black spruce (P. mariana) seedlings to 4 levels of soil compaction for 18-weeks in the greenhouse. Kristy examined the relationship between soil compaction and seed germination, and growth and morphological characteristics of the seedlings.
