The Office of Sustainability in partnership with the Centre for Place and Sustainability will be offering guided walks to explore some of the natural features and lesser known stories of campus.

During the walk we will invite discussion surrounding place and sustainability in an informal and friendly setting, all in the spirit of discovery and sharing.

There will be two walks:
Friday, Sept. 9, from 1 to 2:30 pm
Thursday, Sept. 15, from 11 am to 12:30 pm

We welcome all students to join, especially new, incoming students. Start your Lakehead experience off right and explore parts of the trail system that are right here on campus. You may even get to see some of the wildlife that lives here as well!

Note: Please dress appropriately for the weather, including footwear for walking on uneven ground.

Meet out front of the Chancellor Paterson Library.

Please send questions to coordinator.sustainability@lakeheadu.ca.

The Department of Chemistry presents a talk by Gerardine G. Botte, PhD, Distinguished Professor and Russ Professor, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department
Director, Center for Electrochemical Engineering Research at Ohio University.

"On the Electrolysis of Urea: From Water Remediation to Biomedical Devices"

Abstract:
The electrolysis of urea in alkaline medium is being studied by Dr. Botte and members of her research group at the Center for Electrochemical Engineering Research at Ohio University for multiple applications including: hydrogen production, wastewater remediation, sensors, and biomedical devices. In the process, the electrochemical oxidation of urea to nitrogen and carbon dioxide takes place at the anode of the electrolytic cell in nickel-based electrodes, while hydrogen evolves at the cathodic compartment. The process, with a theoretical cell voltage of 0.37 V at standard conditions, is thermodynamically more favorable than water electrolysis. Because of its low energy consumption and the use of inexpensive catalysts, the technology finds applications for the production of hydrogen on demand requiring only the storage of urea.
In addition to direct production of hydrogen on demand, urea-rich wastewaters can be remediated via urea electrolysis to prevent toxic ammonia emissions and nitrate contamination that currently results from leaving these waters untreated.
The electrochemical response of the urea electrolytic cell is a function of the concentration of urea; therefore, sensors (at the micro and nano scales) can be designed to monitor the concentration of urea online. Urea sensors have numerous applications in different markets, including: food science, clinical diagnostics, wastewater treatment facilities, industrial processes (e.g., power plants and fertilizer industries), and in the diesel automobile/truck market, among others. For example, in clinical diagnostics, monitoring urea in blood provides information on kidney’s disease (the normal range of urea level in serum ranges from 2.5mM to 7.5mM).
In this talk, Dr. Botte will present a summary of the technology including catalysts, oxidation rates, progress on understanding of the reaction mechanism, and the potential of the technology for the development of biomedical devices, e.g., sensors and portable dialysis machines.

ACSS in conjunction with AI, Confederation College, Eabametoong First Nation, Fort William First Nation, Matawa Education, Northern Nishnawbe Education Council, Oshki-Pimache-O-Win, and 7 Generations Education Institute have again planned and organized Maadaadizi 2016 which means he/she starts a journey in the Ojibwe language.

It's our joint post-secondary Aboriginal Student Orientation being held at Marina Park on Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. We have set aside this special day to welcome post-secondary Aboriginal students and their families to their respective institutions and to the City of Thunder Bay.

Grace Dove of "The Revenant" is our Keynote Speaker and the day will include musical performances by Nick Sherman and Bobby Narcisse (Elvis Impersonator).

Information booths by various organizations will be set-up, children's activities, prizes and refreshments will be available. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend. We hope to see you there, rain or shine!
