Each year, faculty members and students at Lakehead develop knowledge and innovation through research and creative projects in EVERY discipline. All projects have successes AND challenges, and we want to hear these stories!

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, the Economic Development and Innovation Office (EDI) will be hosting its Northern SPARK networking event.

The event starts off testing the audience’s knowledge with a few “innovated and entrepreneurial” trivia questions, we then introduce 2-3 pre-selected short (5 minutes or less) presentations.

After the presentations, there is an opportunity for any attendee to step up to the “open mic” and share their story about their new product, service, business idea, or research project with the audience.

We encourage faculty, staff and students to come out enjoy complimentary appetizers and connect with your University community.

DATE: Wednesday, Nov. 8

Everyone is invited to the upcoming  talk by Dr. Harald Pfeiffer from the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics happening on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 pm in ATAC 1003.

His talk is entitled: Colliding black holes and gravitational waves: Seeing the universe through fantastic messengers

101 years ago, Albert Einstein put forth ideas that led to two astonishing predictions.  The first was black holes, regions of space with such intense gravity that nothing can escape, not even light or the strongest rockets.  The second prediction was gravitational waves, the tiniest ripples in space and time itself travelling through the universe.  Just one year ago these fantastic ideas were confirmed by the first observations of gravitational waves created by colliding black holes.  In this talk, Prof. Pfeiffer will introduce black holes and gravitational waves.  He will then trace the story of the remarkable first gravitational wave discoveries, and explain how gravitational waves are used to explore our Universe.

Prof. Pfeiffer studied in Germany and the United Kingdom, before obtaining his PhD from Cornell University (USA) in 2003.  He performed postdoctoral research at the California Institute of Technology and in 2009 joined the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Toronto.  Prof. Pfeiffer holds the Canada Research Chair in Numerical Relativity and Gravitational Wave Astronomy and is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research.  He has received a Bessel Award of the Humboldt Foundation, and has shared in the the Gruber Cosmology Prize and the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for the discovery of gravitational waves. Prof. Pfeiffer performs supercomputer calculations to study black holes and Einstein’s theory of General Relativity.  Using these calculations he searches for gravitational waves with the LIGO gravitational wave detectors, and deciphers what such waves tell us about black holes, our universe, and the behaviour of gravity in the most extreme circumstances.
