Community Engagement

Student Spotlight: Taliah Lalande’s Community Spirit Shines Through

Giving people a sense of belonging is one of Taliah Lalande's missions in life.

The fact that she received a 2025 Lakehead Leader Award for Community Engagement proves just how successful she's been.

A Master of Educational Studies student, Taliah first arrived at Lakehead Orillia as an undergraduate in the Bachelor of Arts and Science program.

"I majored in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on geography," she says. "I love to travel, and the program allowed me to explore and understand the world around me."

But making the transition from high school to university was a little disconcerting. She found herself in a new city where she didn't know a soul.

"There were 14 people in my middle school in Kitchener, so I was used to being in a close-knit group."
Her experience inspired her to help other Lakehead students feel less isolated.

"Loneliness is one of the worst things for mental health, so I decided to help grow students' relationships and connections," she says. "I always checked in with them, listened to them, and brought their concerns forward in meetings."

An Enthusiastic Cheerleader and Supporter

Taliah continued her community building as an intern with Lakehead Orillia Athletics. In this role, she fostered camaraderie among athletes on the soccer and hockey teams and across campus through social media.

"Although I can't play soccer anymore because of an injury, I can still support," she says. "I cheer my loudest and take pictures that the players will cherish."

She's now continuing her work with Lakehead Athletics as a social media and communications assistant.

As an undergraduate, Taliah also volunteered on the board of the Education Student Teacher Association – Orillia (ESTA-O), first as operations director, then, last year, as vice-president.

Organizing events and activities is another way that she's created a greater sense of community.

"We've led food drives and donated the groceries we collected to the Sharing Place Food Centre in Orillia. We wanted to make sure families had access to the essentials."

She also took charge of Crafts and Cocoa. For this popular event, students sell handmade crafts, baked goods, and small items, while ESTA-O sells hot chocolate, coffee, and tea. "It's meant to draw people together, raise funds for charity, and support local student businesses."

A Student to Look Up To

It was because of her efforts to connect students through ESTA-O that Taliah was honoured with a Lakehead Leader Award.

Presented by Lakehead's Student Success Centre, these awards celebrate exceptional students who inspire the Lakehead community.

According to the Student Success Centre, "Taliah was nominated because of her kindness and compassion, consistently demonstrating a dedication to others in every aspect of their involvement at Lakehead."

She's known for offering solace and support to students under stress.

"Someone later told me that having me sit with them made them feel seen and safe. It reminded me how powerful small acts of care can be, and reaffirmed why I want to work in education."

Helping Children Feel Valued

After finishing her undergraduate studies, Taliah wanted to gain more education and experience before jumping into the classroom. She opted for a Master of Educational Studies with a focus on mental health.

"I want to get a better understanding of how I can help students in my own classroom one day.

I'm most drawn to the junior grades," she adds. "I enjoy helping them build their confidence and deepen their social-emotional learning.

I want to become 'that teacher,' the one that students can always turn to."

Brandon Rhéal Amyot Uplifts Students and Communities

"I love to bake—it's my escape and one of the ways that I express caring," says Brandon Rhéal Amyot, a soon-to-be graduate of Lakehead Orillia's Bachelor of Arts and Science in Interdisciplinary Studies program. "When I was a kid, my mom and I would bring trays of baked goods to our neighbours during the holidays."

In elementary school, Brandon's baking abilities helped take them in a new direction after a teacher recommended they attend an Ontario Educational Leadership Centre (OELC) summer camp. "I'm from a working-class family," Brandon explains, "so I spent months baking cookies and selling them at recess to raise money to attend OELC—my mum would find me baking at midnight."

Brandon (second from left) attended Georgian College and Carleton University before coming to Lakehead. They will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Interdisciplinary Studies in June 2025. This unique degree gave them the opportunity to study political science, media, film, and communications.

Brandon's sense of civic engagement is a thread that runs throughout their life. Today, they are an inspiring intersectional activist focused on youth, postsecondary education, media, and the 2SLGBTQ+ and Indigenous communities. They spent 10 years volunteering with Fierté Simcoe Pride—a grassroots organization that advocates for the 2SLGBTQ+ community—before becoming the VP Orillia of the Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU).

"I always ask myself, 'How can I fight for students, for Lakehead, and for equity?' I had to fight to open the door to postsecondary education for myself, and I want to leave it open for others. Although I'm the first person in my family to go to college or university, I hope I won't be the last."

Brandon enrolled at Lakehead Orillia because "it's an interdisciplinary campus by design. I didn't want to go to school simply to get a job. I wanted to become a lifelong learner and build skills to uplift communities, and interdisciplinary studies lend themselves to that." Brandon believes there's real power in students working together. "It's what enabled us to open LUSU Orillia's Food Pantry—an emergency food resource for students in need that's served over 2,200 students since opening in October 2022. The Food Pantry is one of my proudest achievements because I've struggled with food security at certain points.

"After Lakehead, I feel much more prepared to be part of the world and to take on the world," Brandon says. "I owe that to my family, friends, and instructors who've encouraged me to stay the path." Photo credit: Jessica Owen

With the increasing wealth inequality and the social and political challenges gripping us, we need to step up in any way we can," adds Brandon, who recently joined the City of Orillia's Poverty Reduction Working Group. They have also officially launched their career, even though they are still a month away from graduation.

"I've been hired as LUSU's first governance and advocacy officer, supporting student leaders, the union, and our university community. I'm also working part-time with the Paapiiwaaniimaan Grassy Narrows Mercury Care Home as an executive assistant with their Operational Planning Committee. These roles are both close to my heart and offer me a way to give back.

We have to take bold risks as students, faculty, staff, and community members, and do it with grit and with love. That's the whole purpose of higher education—Lakehead instilled in me that a rising tide lifts all boats."

Department of Biology Hosts Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Discovery Day

Dr. Heidi Schraft (Associate Professor and Applied Life Sciences program coordinator) along with support from the biology technicians welcomed high school students from Thunder Bay and Ignace for Discovery Days in Health Sciences.  Students worked as epidemiologists to discover the cause of a foodborne disease outbreak.  Working in groups, they meticulously followed the same steps the Public Health Agency of Canada takes when an outbreak occurs.  Students reviewed interview information from patients, statistically analyzed those data, hypothesized potential food sources from a restaurant, identified potential pathogens isolated from patient and food samples as cultured on different media, and confirmed the pathogen by preparing and running a DNA gel (DNA bacterial fingerprinting).  Students discovered that solving an outbreak is like putting together the pieces of a puzzle and epidemiology would be a very interesting health sciences career.

Lakehead hosts Lake Couchiching water quality research discussion

September 23, 2014 – Orillia, ON

Researchers at Lakehead University’s Orillia campus are offering the public an opportunity to learn about the water quality of Lake Couchiching — including past, present, and future research studies. The presentation and discussion takes place on Friday, September 26 at 500 University Avenue from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.

“This is an opportunity for anyone who uses or appreciates Lake Couchiching to come and learn about research activities on the Lake,” said Research Assistant Debbie Balika, recent graduate of the Master of Biology program at Lakehead. “Those in attendance will not only learn about the various kinds of research being conducted in and around the Lake, but will have an opportunity to ask questions and join in a discussion about future research activities.”

Balika, along with Lakehead professors Dr. Nanda Kanavillil and Dr. Sree Kurissery of the Sustainability Sciences Department, will discuss their ongoing and future research projects. Special guest, Keith Sherman, Executive Director of the Severn Sound Environmental Association, will share past water quality research results.

The event is open to the public and free of charge. For further information and to confirm attendance, those interested in attending should contact Debbie Balika at dbalika@lakeheadu.ca.

September 4, 2014 – Orillia, ON

Beginning September 8, Lakehead University students, faculty and staff will have the option to enjoy a new bus service between Lakehead Orillia’s 500 University Avenue site and the City of Barrie. The new transit link, established by Lakehead University and Hammond Transportation, will provide service between the Lakehead Orillia campus and the Barrie Bus Terminal four times a day (Monday to Friday), as well as on weekends.

“As a leading provider of public transit in Central Ontario, Hammond Transportation is always looking for ways to improve regional public transportation services,” said Greg Hammond, president of Hammond Transportation. “We are proud to play a role in providing Lakehead Orillia’s students, staff and faculty with reliable and regular transportation service.”

“This new service will be tremendously beneficial to students, staff and faculty – who will now have another way of accessing the University,” said Dr. Kim Fedderson, Dean & Vice-Provost of the Orillia campus. “Bringing regional transit into the Orillia campus has always been a priority for us.  It is great to see this new service now in place, helping to facilitate the continued growth of Lakehead in Simcoe County.”

Both Fedderson and Hammond are looking forward to having the Lakehead community use the new bus service as a way of lowering their transit costs, improving the environment and contributing towards a more sustainable future.

The Hammond service, which offers a special discounted rate plan (including single ride, return and multiple ride options), is available to Lakehead University students, faculty and staff, effective Monday, September 8, 2014 – the first official day of classes at the University.

Students living in the Muskoka region will also be able to take advantage of discounted fares, as a Lakehead University stop has been added to Hammond’s Hwy 11 service from Muskoka Monday to Friday.

Lakehead’s discounted rates will also be extended to any Georgian College student who wishes to use the service.  The route to Lakehead includes stops at Georgian College’s Barrie and Orillia campuses.

“Georgian College and Lakehead University have a close working relationship and this agreement is something we hope will be of benefit to both Georgian and Lakehead students alike,” said Frank Cappadocia, Associate Vice-Provost of the Lakehead Orillia campus, who worked with Hammond to set up the discounted rates.

Lakehead students, staff and faculty will have an opportunity to try out the new service for free next week. During the first week of service, from September 8 to 13, Hammond will offer rides at no charge to those who present a valid Lakehead ID card.

Further details, including rates and schedules, can be found at the Lakehead University Orillia website.
