Teaching Students Digital Citizenship: A Cyber Bullying Initiative

This interactive, non-credit workshop provides all teachers, regardless of stream, with an overview of cyber bullying and criteria for embedding digital citizenship curriculum into his or her teaching praxis.

Participants will work together to create manifesto for their classrooms on Web 2.0 safe practices. This workshop involves the following activities:

iPad in the Classroom

This one day interactive, non-credit workshop provides teacher candidates with an overview of how to use iPads in education. This workshop will show you how to find and use educational content on the iPad as well as provide you with the opportunity to create your own content using iPad apps such as iWork and iMovie. During this course, participants will:

safeTALK: Suicide Alertness For Everyone

safeTALK is a program developed by LivingWorks to train and certify suicide alert helpers. As a pre-service teacher,  this course will provide you with a much-needed skill set for handling crisis as well as suicide intervention with students. This course addresses the following information:

Smartboard: Hands-On Lesson Planning Part 2 - Orillia

This is an interactive workshop where participants will have an opportunity to use the software that they learned about in Smartboard Part 1. During this non-credit workshop, you will have an opportunity to explore pre-made lessons. Students will leave the workshop with a lesson that they have designed, created, and demonstrated to their classmates.

Please bring a resource or lesson that you would like to make into an interactive Smartboard lesson. Remember to bring a memory stick to save your completed lesson.

Smartboard in the Classroom Part 1 - Orillia

This non-credit workshop focuses on the technical side of using a Smartboard. Demonstrations include the board’s capabilities and functions, as well some basic troubleshooting. This workshop demonstrates the SMART notebook software as well as the board's integration into other software such as the Microsoft Office Suite. Participants will have an opportunity for some hands on training and a chance to use the board. 

The focus of the training will be more technical then pedagogical, aiming to give the participants a good understanding of how to use the board.

Math for Teaching (J/I) Part 2

The Department of Professional Development is pleased to offer this non-credit course to students at the Faculty of Education. This mathematics concepts course is focused on the specialized concepts of mathematics as needed by teachers who are either concerned about their mathematical competency and/or wish to strengthen their conceptual understanding of elementary mathematics.
