OUTD 1310 FA and FB Outdoor Skills and Theory I
Provides an understanding of the theoretical principles and opportunities to demonstrate competence in a variety of physical and social nature-based environments. Particular emphasis is placed on risk management, land navigation, trip planning, outdoor living and leadership skills. Skill development and application of theory will be enhanced through full day outdoor labs and short-term multi-day activities such as backpacking and canoe tripping.

Course Description:  A studio for beginners exploring traditional and abstract approaches to acrylic painting. Projects will introduce the study of composition, value, colour, and application of materials.

VISU 1015 FDE:  Digital Art - Course Description: Step-by-step instructional videos will introduce commonly used techniques using ADOBE PHOTOSHOP® software to create art from composite images. Course Description: Students will be provided with studio experience of the fundamental components necessary for the creation of visual art. Students will also be introduced to the work of prominent and influential artists as they relate to the projects at hand.

Qualifications Preferred: MFA degree in studio art (preferred).  Must have an advanced understanding of 3-dimensional studio practices including familiarity with materials such as plaster, wood, wax, clay, fabric and/or metal.  A strong understanding and ability to instruct techniques such as woodworking , mould making, casting, sewing/embroidery and/or metal work is required.  Must be able to assist students with the safe use of a variety of hand tools, power tools, and materials, as well as create and maintain health and safety protocols and contribute to the general maintenance of the shared teaching and storage spaces.  Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.

VISU 1050 WA: Introduction to Ceramics
 - Course Description:  An introduction to the techniques of hand building and throwing on the potter's wheel designed to familiarize the students with the nature of clay. The course includes clay and glaze decorating techniques as well as the loading and firing of kilns.

Qualifications Preferred: MFA degree with a concentration in Ceramics (preferred).  Must have experience and a working knowledge of hand building with clay bodies on a large scale, an understanding of glaze mixing and chemistry and a working knowledge and understanding of electric and gas fired kilns. Must also be able to create and maintain health and safety protocols in the Ceramics studio and oversee a part-time studio technician.  Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.

VISU 1090 FDE: Art History: Prehistory to the Middle Ages - 
Course Description:  A survey of the artifacts, art and architecture from Prehistory through to the late Medieval period.  Emphasis is placed on the historical, religious, political and cultural contexts of production with a focus on Western artistic production.

VISU 2013/3110/4110 FA: Explorations in Ceramics/Advanced Ceramics I/Senior Ceramics I
Course Descriptions: 
VISU 2013: Explores hand-building sculptural forms, wheel throwing techniques using different clay bodies, experimentation and development of glaze manipulation.  Participating in the kiln firing process, reduction and oxidation firings is also an integral part of this course.
VISU 3110: Covers advanced techniques for hand building and wheel throwing clay with emphasis on developing an individual expression of form. Examines glaze technology and firing kilns as an integral part of working in ceramics.
VISU 4110: An advanced and intensive exploration of the student's chosen medium. Students are expected to produce a significant body of exhibition quality works of art following an individualized outline decided in consultation with the instructor.

The development of the technical and aesthetic skills required for effective self-expression is explored and an individual drawing series is introduced.

VISU 4013:  Continues the application of techniques and concepts from observation and imagination.  Emphasis is placed on the development of the language of drawing, mark making as an individualized tool, and non-traditional techniques and approaches. An independent series is further developed and presentation issues are considered.

Emphasis is placed on the development of the language of drawing, mark making as an individualized tool, and non-traditional techniques and approaches. An independent series is further developed and presentation issues are considered.
VISU 4014: Students are expected to produce a significant body of exhibition quality works of art continuing the individualized outline established in 4013 and decided in consultation with the instructor. Coursework will be selected as part of a group exhibition for a degree-culminating art exhibition.

VISU 3111/4111 WA: Advanced Ceramics II/Senior Ceramics II
 - Course Descriptions:
VISU 3111: Continues the practice of mastering various techniques used for working with clay. Students will also focus on developing a conceptual framework through a series of studio assignments covering planning, production, and the final presentation of works of art.

VISU 4111: Students are expected to produce a significant body of exhibition quality works of art continuing the individual outline established in 4110 and decided in consultation with the instructor. Coursework will be selected as part of a group exhibition for a degree-culminating art exhibition.
Date/Duration: January 1, 2027-April 30, 2027 (Tues/Thurs 6:00 pm-9:00 pm, 6hrs a week.  Please note that due to enrolment issues this course is bundled)
    Delivery: In-Person

Qualifications Preferred:  MFA degree with a concentration in Ceramics.  Must have advanced experience and a working knowledge of clay bodies, an understanding of glaze chemistry and glaze mixing, and a working knowledge and understanding of both electric and gas fire kilns.  Must be able to create and maintain health and safety protocols in the Ceramics studio and oversee a part-time studio technician. Must also be able to support undergraduate capstone projects and assist with the Honours graduate exhibition.  Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired. 

VISU 3870 FDE: Critical Studies in Feminist Art - 
Course Description: A critical examination of feminism, gender and sexuality in relation to the visual art produced by women from the late 1960s to the contemporary period.

VISU 4010 WA: Internship - 
Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide the student with work experience in an art-related setting. This may involve work in the area of commercial or applied art or other media-based industries, volunteer or paid labour in an art gallery setting, assisting in the teaching of art classes, tutoring in art, or other appropriate work experiences. Work experiences are recorded in a journal. Students have the option of producing a significant paper of sufficient length on a relevant topic. Specific assignments will be arranged for each student.

    Delivery: In-Person

Qualifications Preferred: MFA degree in studio art (preferred) and professional experience in art-related settings such as galleries, community arts organizations, or media and applied arts industries.  Demonstrate strong knowledge of the contemporary art community and local art agencies in Thunder Bay.  Experience mentoring or supervising students in internships or other experiential learning environments is required along with the ability to support reflective practices such as journals and written assignments.  The successful candidate will also have excellent organizational and communication skills and the ability to build partnerships with community organizations. Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of delivery is highly desired.

Compensation:
In accordance with Collective Agreement provisions, Contract Lecturers shall be remunerated at one of the three following levels:
Level 1: $8,355 (per HCE)
Level 2: $8,590 (per HCE)
Level 3: $9,059 (per HCE)
