Lakehead University Professor to speak at the 4th Urban Economy Forum

Dr. Rosario Adapon Turvey, Associate Professor with the Department of Sustainability Sciences and Geography at Lakehead University will speak on the topic: Climate Financing and the Public Sector for the 4th Urban Economy Forum (UEF4) within the theme: Cities and Climate Financing on October 4, 2022 in Toronto. UEF4 is held on the occasion of the United Nations World Habitat Day and organized as an international gathering for key decision makers and stakeholders including Ministers, Mayors, city leaders and financial organizations to deal with various topics relating to sustainable urban development.

The event is hosted by the Urban Economy Forum and this year’s themes will be based on “Sustainable Urban Finance” and economic sustainability in terms of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects along with the impact of the pandemic on the above-mentioned areas. It is envisaged that UEF4 will add great value and create a synergy toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 11 to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Dr. Turvey recently co-edited the IGI-Global book entitled: “Intellectual, Scientific and Educational Influences on Sustainability Research” with Dr. Sreekumari Kurissery, Professor and Acting Dean, Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies at Lakehead.

New Environmental Sustainability certificate program launching at Lakehead University

February 15, 2018 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, ON

 Lakehead University is introducing a new certificate program that will prepare students to address the complex and interconnected environmental challenges facing society today.

 The new Certificate in Environmental Sustainability is a five-course, online program for professionals and practitioners alike who want to enhance their skills, knowledge base and expertise in the field of environmental sustainability. The program, offered through Lakehead Orillia’s Department of Sustainability Sciences, can be completed within one year.  

 “Environmental sustainability has become a very in-demand field,” says Dr. Sree Kurissery, Chair, Department of Sustainability Sciences at Lakehead Orillia. “The program prepares graduates for a diverse and growing field in both the public and private sector, where they will enjoy many opportunities to research and come up with scientifically-based solutions for environmental issues.”

 The first cohort will begin online classes in May 2018.

 “More and more people are embracing the notion of sustainability to help preserve and protect the planet,” says Dr. Todd Randall, Dean, Science and Environmental Studies. “With this program, students will gain the scientific expertise and practical experience needed to solve modern sustainability challenges in Canada and around the world.”

 Issues in Environmental Sustainability, Inquiry into Environmental Methods, and Sustainable Communities are required courses for the Certificate in Environmental Sustainability. 

 Applicants must have a degree in a relevant field such as urban and regional planning, geography, interdisciplinary studies, biology, ecology, natural resource/environmental maagement, tourism etc. from a recognized post-secondary institution.
