In collaboration with the Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) and the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association (TBMA), the Newcomer Legal Clinic would like to invite you, and anyone who is interested in this, to join us for a Conference discussing the impact of immigration policies on our community members and how we can work together on strengthening this community during this time of change.
 
This conference, called We Are Here To Stay, will be held at the Outpost on Lakehead Main Campus on Saturday, May 3, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. EST. Please use the QR Code in the invitation to RSVP for the event. 
 
RSVPs will end one week before the event, so make sure to secure your spot! Lunch and snacks will be provided, community members will be speaking and sharing their stories, and we will have Elder Sheila DeCorte joining us for this conference. We will also be doing a few workshops during the afternoon part of the conference. Thank you and we hope to see you all there!

Course Description:

This course is designed to immerse students in the foundational concepts, methodologies, and practices within the realm of program evaluation research, with a specific emphasis on social justice issues. Participants will gain exposure to a diverse array of contemporary evaluation practices aimed at scrutinizing and enhancing programs dedicated to promoting equality, solidarity, human rights, and the recognition of every individual's citizenship. The curriculum encompasses a spectrum of learning activities including the design, execution, and evaluation of the efficacy of social justice initiatives. A central component of this course will be the integration and application of evidence-based practices within the framework of social       justice, ensuring that students are well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of a more equitable and inclusive society.

Course Description: At the confluence of creativity and advocacy, Indigenous artivism envisions equality and land ethics. The main objective of this course is to suggest links between Indigenous peoples from Turtle Island (North America), and Abiayala (Latin America) through contemporary Indigenous artivist embroidery, muralism, hip-hop lyrics, performance, video and oraliture. Some of the readings and videos will be in translation from Spanish and Native Languages. Interviews with the authors/artists and communities will enrich the discussions about personal experiences and specific local issues. This course may be interesting to the programs of Indigenous Learning, English, Languages and Literatures, American Studies, International Relations, Visual Arts, Anthropology, Sociology, Geography, among others.
