Learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), find out how words mean, explore how the brain processes language, and discover the history of languages and alphabets! Introduction to Language introduces the basic concepts of linguistics – the sounds of language (phonetics), the sound patterns of language (phonology), the building blocks of words (morphology), how sentences work (syntax), how language makes meaning (semantics), and much, much more. Read, watch, listen, and interactively play your way through this full-credit course to lay a foundation for studying languages, to prepare for a career in speech pathology, or to learn more about how language works and how it influences the way in which humans interact with each other and the world. Open to all! A linguistics fun fact: Papua New Guinea has over 800 living languages, making it the most linguistically diverse place on earth! Following content is on the right hand-side of the poster: “The marvellous thing is that even in studying linguistics, we find that the universe as a whole is patterned, ordered, and to some degree intelligible to us.” Kenneth J. Pike. Read the text, watch videos, practice the skills, & do the tests. Online, no set hours (except test days). Practice/study with online activities.
