Interdisciplinary Studies Courses

Inquiry courses form the core of HBASc and BASc programming within the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.  Using a problem-based learning model, mandatory Inquiry offerings at the first, third, and fourth year levels allow students to analyze complex questions, develop critical thinking skills, and present research findings in a clear manner.  Prior the 2016/17 academic year, three Inquiry courses—INTD 1010, INTD 3010, and INTD 4801—were taken by IS students that used the varying research specialties of faculty members as subject material.

Inquiry offerings are now aligned with the four new IS concentration areas in Environment in Politics and Culture, Human Nature, International Conflict & Human Rights, and Social Justice.  First year Inquiry classes introduce students to problem-based learning strategies within each concentration theme, third year Inquiry classes address a specific topic within a concentration theme and highlight relevant research strategies, and the fourth year capstone Inquiry classes allow students to undertake an original research project or engage in intensive seminars in a concentration theme.
