The Impact Rankings measure the societal impact of universities by evaluating an institution's success in delivering the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. In 2022, Lakehead has been ranked as one of the top universities in the world contributing to poverty reduction, elimination of hunger, reduced inequalities, good health, and wellbeing, and to peace, justice, and strong institutions.

Lakehead University has been named the #1 Canadian research university by Research Infosource for five years in a row (2015-2019) and the #1 in the not-for-profit category in the last two years (2020-2021). This achievement is a first for a university in this category.

Maclean's has once again included Lakehead University among Canada's top 10 primarily undergraduate universities in the magazine's 2023 University Rankings. Lakehead ranked tenth out of 19 primarily undergraduate universities from across Canada.
Maclean's 2023 University Rankings placed Lakehead top 2 in Ontario in student awards, faculty awards, scholarships and bursaries, student/faculty ratio, library expenses, library acquisitions, and social sciences and humanities grants; and top 3 in total research dollars and student services.
