Indigenous Student Services Centre is pleased to have Elder Beatrice Twance-Hynes available to students, staff and faculty for individual or small group teachings.

Elder Beatrice, is a member of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation. Elder Beatrice is a traditional women’s dancer who makes her own regalia. She is a grandmother pipe carrier, a sacred circle facilitator, songwriter, singer and drummer. She shares teachings on hand drumming, the Medicine Wheel, Sacred Medicines, and the Seven Grandfathers Teachings.

You are welcome to stop by to visit with Elder Beatrice in the Elders Room in the Gakina Nindinawemaaganag Lounge UC1007.

 Winter Teachings and Preparing for Spring

In this presentation Mkomose will focus on gkinoomaage biboon - winter teachings - related to the sustainable ways that pre-contact regional Anishinaabe peoples thrived. Winter is a time to look at the past, in the present, while using the Aadizookanag ancient stories, to envision ways to approach a future of thriving for all relations minawaa zhiitaawsidoon minookimi (and preparing for spring) as the ancestors once did.

Dr. Andrew Judge

Mkomose - Andrew Judge, PhD - is an Anishinaabe scholar, educator, and knowledge keeper who focuses on Anishinaabe and Indigenous knowledge systems, land-based education, and environmental stewardship. He is of Anishinaabe and Irish descent and has dedicated much of his nearly two decade long career to reviving traditional ecological knowledge and fostering deeper connections between people and the natural world.

Niibin Gimiwan Summer Rain (Elder Sheila De Corte) from Animikii Wajiw/Thunder Mountain (Fort William First Nation) will be sharing Tobacco Teachings.

Commercialized forms of tobacco versus the natural traditional forms of tobacco. The benefits and uses of natural tobacco with a small demonstration of how to harvest and make your own natural tobacco from the land.

Join Mkomose (Dr. Andrew Judge) for an engaging dialogue around Anishinaabe pedagogical practices. Mkomose has been a Professor of Anishinaabe and Indigenous Studies for 15 years and his PhD is in Indigenous education from Western University. In this dialogue he will share some of the ways he's implemented Anishinaabe pedagogical practices in teaching, assessment design, and course design in delivering over 50 courses throughout his career. The ISSC in partnership with the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre will be hosting a Status Card Clinic on Tuesday, January 28th from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Gakina Nindinawemaaganag.  You will need the following:

- 1 piece of government issues ID (passport, driver’s licence, photo card, or health card)

- a guarantor (someone who has known you for 2 years or more, is over the age of 18 and is registered under the Indian Act or be employed in an eligible occupation)

- if applying for the first time, then an original copy of your birth certificate is required.

The TBIFC helps to process the status card applications. They do not issue/print cards.
