Please Note: Lakehead University does not offer the following combination of teaching subjects:

  • Chemistry and Physics
  • Environmental Science and Mathematics
  • French as a Second Language with Visual Arts
  • Music-Instrumental with Music-Vocal

 
Teaching Subject Pre-requisites:
 
French as Second Language: Applicants must present five (5) full year course equivalents, or the equivalent, in French, in order to qualify for the French as a Second Language teaching subject.
 
Health & Physical Education: A recognized undergraduate degree in Kinesiology or Physical Education is required for the first teaching subject. Activity courses do not count toward the number of required courses for the Health & Physical Education teaching subject. Only (1) full year course, or the equivalent, in Anatomy and/or Physiology will count toward the Health & Physical Education teaching subject. Students applying to Health & Physical Education as a second teaching subject are not required to have one half year course, or the equivalent, at the senior level.
 
History, Geography, and English: One (1) full year course, or the equivalent, in Political Science can be used towards the History teaching subject. Applicants should present a Canadian content course within the respective teaching subject background.

Social Sciences-General (Second teachable only) (Intermediate-Senior only): Applicants must present at least three (3) full year courses, or the equivalent, from any combination of at least three of the following: Anthropology, Religious Studies, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology or Women's Studies.

Mathematics: Of the required number of full year course equivalents, only one (1) full year course, or the equivalent, in Statistics, will be counted towards the Mathematics 1st teaching subject only. (Note: Statistics will not be counted towards the 2nd teaching subject in Mathematics - only pure Mathematics courses).

Music (Vocal and Instrumental):  A recognized undergraduate degree (i.e. HBMus) in Music is required. Lakehead University does not offer Music-Instrumental and Music-Vocal in combination as teaching subjects. Students are required to teach music in a "band" setting conducting students playing a variety of instruments (i.e. guitar, violin, brass ensemble, etc) and should have a variety of courses in different instruments. A background in conducting and/or ensemble courses is required.
 
Native Language: All of the required full year course equivalents must be the same language.
 
Native Studies: Applicants must present a minimum number of full year course equivalents from any of the following subject areas: Indigenous Learning, Native Studies and Canadian Studies.
 
*Environmental Science (Outdoor Ecological and Experiential Education Program) (Intermediate-Senior only):
Although outdoor skills are incorporated into the OE3 program, the primary emphasis of this program is not on outdoor skill development but rather the pedagogy involved in teaching ecological literacy; self-development through an inner journey; a sense of community; and experiential learning in the outdoors.  Although it may be an advantage to have a background in the outdoors, it is not required to complete the program - focus is interdisciplinary.
 
Applicants must present a minimum number of full year course equivalents for either a first or second teaching subject from any least three of the following disciplines: Anthropology (Science courses only), Astronomy,  Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies (Science courses only), Geography (Science courses only), Geology (Earth Sciences), Outdoor Recreation or Physics.

*By selecting Environmental Science as either your first or second teaching subject on the Teacher Education Application form you are automatically applying to the outdoor specialization and all of its components.

Science-Biology (Intermediate-Senior only): Applicants must present a minimum number of full year course equivalents for either a first or second teaching subject, as well as a combination of both plant and animal (invertebrate and vertebrate) Biology.  Only 1.5 full year courses, or the equivalent, from the following list, will be counted towards the Biology teaching subject: Biochemistry, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Histology, Immunology.  All other courses must be core Biology courses.

Science-Chemistry (Intermediate-Senior only): Applicants can count only 1 full credit in Biochemistry and only 1 full credit in Pharmacy courses can be counted if relevant.

Science-General: Applicants must present a minimum number of full year course equivalents from any combination of the following subject areas: Anthropology (Science courses only), Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies (Science courses only), Geography (Science courses only), Geology (Earth Sciences), Astronomy, Meteorology and Physics. At least three (3) of these subject areas must be represented.  

Science-Physics (Intermediate-Senior only): Applicants can count courses (if relevant) in the following areas: Fluids, Mechanics of Materials, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Dynamics, Statics, Electrical/Electronic Technology.

Visual Arts:
A recognized undergraduate degree in Visual Arts is required for both the first and second teaching subject. A maximum of one (1) full year course, or the equivalent, in Art History will count towards the Visual Arts teaching subject.  The majority of courses presented must be studio courses.
