Robert (Bob) Bowles
Biography

The name “Bob Bowles” is synonymous with ecological stewardship throughout the Simcoe County and Muskoka region. Bob is an award-winning environmental consultant, writer, artist, nature photographer, educator, and naturalist.

“Forest ecosystems harbour diverse species of flora and fauna, like mushrooms, insects, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals,” Bob says. “Many of these species are at risk.” He believes that by safeguarding local natural habitats, we can sustain ourselves and the planet.

Bob lives in Orillia where he owns and operates Bowles Environmental Consultants and Nature Tours. After a 32-year career as an engineering technologist with Ontario Hydro, Bob retired in 2000. Since then, he has devoted himself to environmental protection and education.

Among his achievements, Bob is the founder of Kids for Turtles Environmental Education, Friends of Scout Valley, and the Muskoka and Carden Field Naturalist groups. He also hosts the Rogers Cable TV series “Focus on Nature with Bob Bowles” and writes a weekly science and nature column for the Orillia Packet and Times.

Bob’s connection to Lakehead University goes back to 2006 – the summer preceding the opening of the downtown Orillia campus.

He was approached by biologist and Lakehead Interdisciplinary Studies Professor Nanda Kanavillil to set up environmental research studies for students. Bob has risen to this challenge by helping countless students, staff, and faculty advance their understanding of complex ecosystems and forge valuable ties with their communities.

Bob’s relationship with Lakehead continues to grow. He is a member of the Community Relations Subcommittee of the Orillia Campus Advisory Committee and he is a frequent guest lecturer in programs such as Humanities 101. He is a true friend of Lakehead Orillia who promotes the University’s mission wherever he goes.

Bob Bowles’s environmental and community work has been widely recognized. He is an honorary life member of Ontario Nature, a member of the Order of Orillia, and was named a “Conservation Pioneer” at the 2006 A.D. Latornell Conservation Symposium. Other distinctions include receiving a 2006 Province of Ontario Leading Volunteer Award, a 2007 Orillia Citizen Of The Year Award, and a 2012 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
