General Arts

Our General Arts program is a great choice if you are looking for a multidisciplinary education that allows you the freedom to explore your interests. It is very easy to move from the General Arts program into a specific major at any point – this is recommended if you wish to apply to graduate or professional school after. 

Our General Arts program has fifteen departments, within the Faculty of Social Science & Humanities, choose courses from:

We offer our General Arts program entirely online if you are looking for a flexible approach to your education, should time or mobility be an issue. Additionally, college graduates from General Arts & Science and Liberal Arts programs are welcome to apply for admission consideration through our College Transfer Program.

Our faculty members are very involved in research at a national and international level. As a General Arts student you will have many opportunities to participate in research on various topics, depending on your particular area of interest. These opportunities may include summer work positions and seminar and/or directed reading courses. 

We also offer the ability to do a joint BA degree with a Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Native Education at the Primary, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior levels. This is particularly beneficial if you wish to teach in Northwestern Ontario.

Ontario High School Students
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD);
  • A minimum of 6 Grade 12U or M courses, or equivalent, including program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum 70%* overall final average**

Other Canadian High School Students

International HS/ College or University
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Successful graduation from an academic secondary school program or equivalent (For most countries, the same academic preparation as is required for university entrance in that country is required for consideration. Refer to Admission Requirements by Country.) 
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • Equivalent of a minimum 70% overall final average (Canadian)

Canadian College
 General Admission Requirements:

College transfer applicants who are applying to a program that does not have a college transfer pathway are eligible for admission consideration if they have:

  • Completed a minimum of 1 year of full-time academic studies at an accredited community college since leaving high school;
  • Completed the appropriate program-specific prerequisite courses; and
  • Achieved a minimum overall average of 70%. 
Canadian University
 General Admission Requirements:
  • Attended a university and successful completion of university level course work since leaving high school/college;
  • Program specific prerequisite courses;
  • A minimum overall average of C or 60%.
Canadian Bible College
 General Admission Requirements:
  • A minimum overall average of C / 60% or equivalent;
  • College must be accredited by the Association of Biblical Higher Education (ABHE);
  • Successfully meets the minimum program specific preparatory course prerequisites at the Grade 12U or M level or equivalent;
  • If not eligible right out of high school, a minimum of two years of full time studies must be completed at the Bible College.

The General Arts program strives to overcome the restrictions of traditional programs by allowing as much latitude as possible when choosing courses. Therefore, first year requirements are very flexible and driven by your interests. 

Out of the fifteen courses you will complete to successfully obtain your BA, no more than four may be taken outside of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies, as well as the Faculty of Education if you are pursuing a joint Native Education degree. If you wish to major after first year, these requirements will change based on your field of choice.

There are regular work and community programming opportunities during the summer and the academic year to supplement your in-class learning. We maintain close relationships with local businesses and organizations that reach out to our Faculty when they have special projects, or job positions, that are uniquely suited to our students' expertise. We recommend speaking to your professors or the Department Chair for current opportunities.

We have many student-run societies and clubs that cater to virtually any interest! These organizations are integral to our sense of community on campus. They host events, fundraisers, workshops, and competitions to bring people together and raise awareness for unique topics and issues.
