Local Learning

Local Partnerships and Groups

The Office of Sustainability, Food and Conference Services, Research and Innovation, and many of our faculties, work with community organizations and local schools to offer sustainability learning experiences on campus. In the 2022/2023 academic year, this included the citywide kickoff of Waste Reduction Week, Lake Superior Living Labs Network's Climate Action Field School for local high school students, SDG Canada Week, a climate forum in conjunction with EcoSuperior and the City of Thunder Bay for Grade 9 students on climate action and stormwater management, and sustainability campus tours for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine's Annual General Meeting and the C2U Expo's 2023 Annual Conference held at Lakehead.

Lake Superior Living Labs Network: Climate Action Field School

The Lake Superior Climate Action Field School was developed in partnership with the Lake Superior Living Labs Network, Lakehead University, University of Minnesota Duluth, Michigan Technological University, Algoma University and community partners and scholars across the Lake Superior Watershed. The Field School supported a diverse group of young people, who are poised to become regional and national climate leaders, as they participated in an experiential training program of virtual workshops, community site visits, and events in coastal communities around the Lake Superior Watershed in the summer of 2021.

The field school utilized a hybrid virtual and on-site design. Virtual events included participants in four locations: Thunder Bay, ON – Sault Ste Marie, ON – Houghton, MI – and Duluth, MN.

The on-site Climate Action Field Schools in Thunder Bay and Sault Ste Marie took place Aug 21-27, 2021.  Participants joined together in person daily, conducted independent site visits, digitally documented the experiences, and connected and shared across hubs virtually.
