(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's Department of Psychology today announced that its PhD in Clinical Psychology, the first PhD program offered at Lakehead, has recently received accreditation from the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA). This landmark news-in concert with $1 million in multi-institutional collaborative funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) for the development of the Centre for Biological Timing and Cognition (CBTC) over the next five years-has positioned the department for steady academic and research growth.

(Thunder Bay) Many scientists consider climate change to be the most serious threat facing the world today. Environment North, the Food Security Research Network, and the Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) are hosting Climate Change: Solving it Together II. Rotary Clubs of Thunder Bay, the Chronicle Journal, and Bay Credit Union are sponsoring the event, which takes place at the Lakehead University Outpost on Saturday, September 22.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's Orientation staff members are gearing up to welcome new students to the Thunder Bay campus. The theme for the University's 2007-2008 Orientation Week is Changes. Challenges. Choices, and staff members have developed a fun, informative, and activity-filled week in which new students, alongside their family and friends, may start participating as early as tomorrow evening. Residence move-in takes place on the morning of Friday, August 31, and official orientation activities will run from Saturday, September 1 to Wednesday, September 5.

The theme for the University's 2007-2008 Orientation Week is Changes Challenges Choices, and organizers have developed a fun, informative, and activity-filled schedule for new students, their family, and their friends. Events will run from September 4 to 5.

(Thunder Bay) Perrine Lesueur, Master's Student at Lakehead University's Outdoor School of Recreation and Tourism, will conduct web-based recreational surveys, data from which will be mapped and may eventually be used to help make decisions about forests and their uses, protect specific natural areas, and maintain recreational opportunities in the region. The research will be conducted in partnership with Lakehead University's Centre for Tourism, and Parks and Outdoor Recreation Research of Canada.

(Thunder Bay) Today, Lakehead University announced the winner of its Smart Car contest, developed in conjunction with the controversial and widely publicized 2006 YaleShmale/Be Smart Awareness Campaign. Dr. Fred Gilbert, President of the university, presented Rebecca Hand, who will become an Honours BASc/BEd student at Lakehead's Orillia campus, with her pre-paid four-year lease to a Smart Car.

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University has developed digital orientation packages for its new students (2007). As opposed to the former paperbound document, this university-wide initiative will allow incoming students to access valuable university information by USB key, a standardized serial computer interface that allows simplified attachment of peripherals. The USB key is also a companion to the Orientation website.

(Thunder Bay) Today, Lakehead University will host 35 Crown Wards and their support workers for Post-Secondary Education Day. The event aims to support Crown Wards' completion of high school, as well as their subsequent transition to, and success with, post-secondary education and training.

(Thunder Bay) A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between Lakehead University and Yancheng Teachers University, which is located in Yancheng, China, a city of 8 million people in the coastal province of Jiangsu, China.

(Thunder Bay) Jason Kerr, a second-year HBASc/BEd student at Lakehead's Orillia Campus, will be participating in Lakehead University's International Exchange Program this September. Kerr is enrolled to study at Hogskolan Dalarna University in Sweden for one semester, and is Lakehead's first Orillia student to participate in an international exchange.

(Thunder Bay) Today, Lakehead University's Faculty of Graduate Studies, in conjunction with the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies, announced a new Master's program in Environmental Studies that is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2007. The program is a Master of Environmental Studies - Northern Environments and Cultures and is the first of its kind in Ontario. It will concentrate on the inhabitants and environments in Canada's Boreal Forest, and as far north as its boundary with the Tundra -- territory described as the "mid-north," "near-north," or "provincial north," and sometimes referred to as the "forgotten north."

(Thunder Bay) Lakehead University's 2007 Shads have determined that the R-Card, a zero waste technology product will be entered into the National Shad Cup, to be held this October in Waterloo, Ontario. This prototype, developed by e-finity, is designed to reduce paper waste generated by consumer receipts, while also simplifying financial record keeping. According to the group's business plan, "e-finity strives to provide ease of use and efficiency to consumers in an environmentally responsible fashion. The R-Card eliminates paper receipt waste while providing a convenient organizational tool for consumers."

(Thunder Bay) Today, Lakehead University introduced three recipients of the 2007 Province of Ontario Leadership in Faculty Teaching (LIFT) award: Drs. Seth Agbo (Education), Inderjit Nirdosh (Chemical Engineering), and Tom Potter (Outdoor Recreation Parks and Tourism). The LIFT award, developed by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities, recognizes excellent teaching by college and university faculty across Ontario.
